The lives of four half-sisters create a hodgepodge of fun, chaos, and different stories in this Joel C. Lamangan feature that delighted moviegoers in 2007.
Iza Calzado, Ruffa Gutierrez, Ruffa Mae Quinto, and Marian Rivera are thrown in a hilarious conundrum as they meet halfway in the Regal Films movie, Desperadas. In the film, the four actresses are siblings from different fathers. They have to navigate their lives harmoniously despite their many differences in lifestyle, profession, passion, even economic stature.
Calzado plays Stephanie, a conservative lawyer who struggles with her married life. She is burdened by the fact that she and her husband, Richard (TJ Trinidad). Marian Rivera plays the playful character of Courtney, who is engaged with her very conservative boyfriend, Patrick (Will Devaughn). Quinto plays the free-spirited sexologist and book author, Dr. Patricia Llanes Quinto, Ph.D. Lastly, Ruffa Gutierrez plays the spendthrift, Isabella, a socialite who takes shopping as a pastime. Their colorful lives converge in the same compound where their mother made them promise to live together.
However, despite their differences, the four siblings succeed at finding common ground where they can all stand. They try to resolve their problems together, and they become each other’s strength in times of adversaries. They grow supportive of each other’s careers, love life, and dreams. Isabella Gutierrez’s character often infuriates her sisters, who are easily annoyed by her being frank and go-getter. Ruffa Mae’s character, Patricia, falls for Wendell Ramos’s character, who is later revealed to be homosexual. Despite her wrong choices, however, Patricia remains a comic figure throughout the film.
Marian Rivera’s bubbly side is also revealed in the film through her character, Courtney. Her biggest dilemma is her husband-to-be, converted by his evangelist father, which suddenly makes him over-conservative.
While the film had mixed reviews from critics, it enjoyed commercial success, as it grossed more than 60 million pesos at the local box office. It was for that reason that a sequel to the film was released a year later.
