The PBB house has consistently been thrown into disarray, from chips to peanut butter by the housemates’ seemingly perpetual war over food.

You can’t say PBB is really the ‘teleserye ng totoong buhay’ if the house tenants don’t get confused by some misunderstanding over food. Over the years, the issue of food has been a constant point of argument between housemates, and it’s easy to understand why. As the PBB house runs on fixed budgets, the scarcity and allocation of food is a major concern among housemates.
In 2014, Mang Juan’s product placement on the show was inadvertently maximized when it became the cause of understanding between housemates Axel Torres and Alex Gonzaga. Torres was a regular housemate, while Gonzaga was a celebrity-guest-turned-regular housemate of the PBB: All In season. On the other hand, Mang Juan is a popular local chips brand, which was among the major sponsors for that season of PBB.
The misunderstanding between Alex and Axel started when Axel was stopped from opening a bag of Mang Juan so that they could save it for dinner. Axel could have easily understood that, given that the housemates lost the week’s challenge, which resulted in their budget getting reduced, but seeing Alex enjoying Mang Juan, a few moments later just didn’t sit well with Torres.
Torres ended up airing his confusion to his other housemates, to whom he vented out his anger over the supposed VIP treatment on other housemates. The issue was brought up inside the confession room by Gonzaga, who admitted that she felt uncomfortable seeing other people offended by her actions. The two eventually patched things up but little did they know that Mang Juan catapulted to Twitter’s worldwide trends during their brief misunderstanding.
Similarly, in 2012, Kit Thompson had a ‘vent-out’ moment because of the housemates’ misunderstanding over chicken. The quarrel started when Kuya prohibited the girl housemates from talking and contacting the boy housemates, and vice-versa. With contact and conversation not allowed between housemates, it became extremely hard for them to understand each other. The confusion between food came when Kit decided to cook fried chicken for everybody, but the girls took a big portion of the chicken to be cooked for themselves.
An open forum became the venue for the housemates to settle the issue, but it also became the perfect timing for Kit to air his anger. “…hahakutin mo ang manok sa taong nag-mamabait sa iyo?” he asked Clodet, uttering a statement that quickly sent him to the trending topics chart. His ‘Gusto kong sumabog, magsabi ng masasamang…mga words” is arguably the most popular line that made him the subject of many viral memes that came out online after the incident.
And now, with the current PBB Kumunity Season 10 Celebrity Edition, the war over food seems to be a perpetual trouble-bringer among housemates. A conflict between celebrity housemates Alexa Ilacad and Albie Casiño brewed. In a recent episode of the ongoing reality show, Casiño opened up to his housemates how Ilacad’s insistence on including a jar of peanut butter in their weekly budget made him irritated. The actor reiterated that the peanut butter could be forgone since the house is on strict budgeting. Ilacad, on the other hand, insisted it was just a small reward for the efforts they’ve pulled off to win the week’s budget.
As of this writing, no proper resolution has been made between Alexa and Albie, but it is worth noting that this incident happened at the height of Albie’s ‘ADHD’ issue, which is most likely the reason for the actor’s behavior.
