Derrick Monasterio’s physique is getting hotter and hotter these days but not to prepare for sexy roles.
Its main reason is his dream to become an Olympian like Hidilyn Diaz, the Philippines’ champion in weightlifting.
He revealed it on August 18, during the virtual press conference for his latest single Virgo.
Virgo is set to be released on August 20.
“Sa totoo lang, hindi naman ako nagpapa-sexy talaga eh. Nag wo-workout lang talaga ako kasi gusto ko lang lumakas. Gusto ko kasi—actually—ang downfall ko sa showbiz, gusto ko maging Olympic athlete.”

“Before pa ginagawa ni Hidilyn ‘yan (weightlifting), ginagawa ko na ‘yan mga two years ko nang tine-train ‘yan. Sumikat lang siya dahil sa mga atleta natin ngayon pero gusto ko sumali sa Olympics, gusto ko sumali sa Crossfit games,” he said.
Currently, Derrick’s focus is entirely on his goal. He is dedicated to his training and meal plan.
“So sa ngayon, doon talaga ako mas naka-focus like training every day. Mayro’n akong tatlong different coach. Mayroon akong meal plan. As in para talaga sa sarili ko.”
When asked if Filipinos would soon see him compete in the Olympics,
Derrick confidently answered, “Yes. With how I’m doing right now, parang medyo malayo na rin yung narating ko sa training. Ngayon sobrang nagdi-disiplina ako.”
He even shared the last time he drank liquor was a year ago, proving that his attention solely lies on becoming an Olympian like Hidilyn.
“Last time kong uminom ng alcohol was one year ago. So grabe na yung disiplina ko sa sarili ko.
“Like natutulog ako ng maaga ngayon, especially nagkaroon ng pandemic na walang mga show, natututo akong baguhin yung mga habits ko po.
“So, sana magtranslate siya. Sana ano, masarap din kasi na nirerepresent mo yung Philippines,” he shared.
However, with a rocking body like his, there are times when fans can cross the line. But Derrick is not offended by such comments since he takes them as ‘compliments.’
“Hanggang ngayon tina-tag ako pero hindi naman siya nakakaoffend for me. Maraming mga gano’ng comments pero di siya offensive for me. Kasi para sa’kin compliment din yo’n eh. Sa indecent proposals, wala naman. Never ako nabastos sa mga ganun,” he answered.
