Raymond Gutierrez’s coming out interview with Mega revealed the saddest part of Pinoy Culture in reacting to a person’s sexuality.
Browsing through the comment section of news outlets publishing Gutierrez’s story, readers could see how Filipino’s reacted to Gutierrez’s coming out. Most of them noted that they already knew the celebrity’s sexuality before he came out.
Despite the relevance of LGBTQIA+ media in today’s society, Filipinos still have less than favorable views about gays and lesbians. In the country, they would often use one’s sexuality and gender expression as a defining factor of a person.
Filipinos have this knack of immediately assuming about a person’s SOGIE (Sexual Orientation Gender Identity and Expression) based solely on what they perceived without confirmation.
However, some understood what Gutierrez went through and expressed support for the celebrity. They also called out other Filipinos behavior on social media regarding Gutierrez’s story.

Mocking Raymond Guttierez’ coming out as gay undermines the person’s process in what they’ve gone through to reach this decision. This only goes to show how unkind and disrespectful some people, even some LGBTIQ people are, towards LGBTIQ.

Regardless if ngayon lang siya nag out. we don't rush people. We don't decide for them to come out. That is their decision to make. Stop saying matagal na namin alam, or amoy na kita dati. Stop toxicity mga cyst. Kahit straight or LGBTQ ka pa mind your own business. RESPECT them. https://t.co/lJto91Dnu2

Congrats, Raymond! One can come out in his own time. Wag nating pangunahan ang tao. Just respect his sexuality and his choice to keep it. pic.twitter.com/v39QNfyi7M

Ang lungkot.

*pretends to be shocked
*OMG sige straight na pala ako guys
*alam na namin te
*super delayed na pic.twitter.com/hJ5J9JPiiB— Ate Dick (Inah Evans) (@_AteDick) August 1, 2021
Raymond Gutierrez comes out and everyone's snarkily commenting na as if hindi pa halata.
Newsflash: someone else's sexuality is not your call.
