Stuck On You stars Yves Flores and Iyo Canlas share their opinions about straight men portraying LGBTQIA+ roles.
In their interviews, Flores agreed on the movement for better representation of LGBTQIA+ characters.
“Yung mga situation na ganyan, kasi yung isang queer actor lang yung makakaunawa at makakaconnect. For example, yung pain ng lack of acceptance sa magulang, yung hirap ng mag-coming out. Ganon sa ideal world, ang queer actors ang gaganap sa queer characters.”
However, Flores said that he believes allies are welcome to portray an LGBTQIA+ role as it expands their knowledge of the LGBTQIA+ community.
“Pero sa ngayon, nakakalungkot man pero may struggle pa rin sa industry na para maging ideal tayo. Ang paniniwala ko d’yan is, Allies are welcome play these roles, as long as nagagawa mo s’ya ng tama. At lumalawak na rin ‘yung knowledge namin about sa community at sa laban nila.”
As for Canlas, who received feedback about his portrayal of the role, he said that he doesn’t let comments negatively affect him as an actor.
“Sa ganyang aspect, kunyari inaatake na yung pagkatao ko and all that. I’m not the type siguro with my personality hindi ako ‘yung tipong naapektuhan nang madali. Yung naapektuhan ako hindi s’ya ‘yun in a negative way parang lalo pa akong namo-motivate para gawin ng mabuti yung craft ko.”
Recently, the LGBTQIA+ community in both Hollywood and the local showbiz scene is calling for better representation through having LGBTQIA+ actors portray LGBTQIA+ roles.
As for Canlas and Flores, they star in the upcoming BL Series, Stuck on You, under Ride or Die productions. The story is about two guys who hooked up during the pandemic and get stuck with each other during the implementation of a strict lockdown.
