In a recent Zoom meeting with the media on June 17, Aiko Melendez shared her plans of joining politics again.
She shared that she is running for congress and would be representing Quezon City’s fifth district.
“Mas marami talagang nag-uudyok sa akin na tumakbo bilang kongresista kasi nga nine years akong naging konsehal, na-experience ko na ‘yon, gusto ko namang mag-level up sa public service.
“I’ve always been behind the scenes. I want to go back to that direction,” she shared in an interview with the ABS-CBN News.
In January this year, Arjo Atayde, the Kapamilya award-winning actor, got linked with speculations that he intends to enter politics as Congressman for district five of Quezon City.
It seemed that the two celebrities are eyeing the same position in the same vicinity.
But Melendez cleared that she will not be running for the same seat with his fellow actor Arjo Atayde, who is also from the city of Quezon.
She clarified she talked with Sylvia Sanchez, Atayde’s mother, and she told her that her son is eyeing to be a public servant for District 1, not District 5.
Melendez will not be competing with anyone from the entertainment industry for the congressional seat representing Quezon City’s fifth district.
In 2001, the award-winning actress ran for a councilorship seat in Quezon City’s second district and eventually won. She served for nine years until her term ended in 2010.
