Celebrities, Netizens, and personalities are waiting for President Duterte’s response after retired Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio accepted his challenge to a debate, Thursday, May 6.
Earlier on Wednesday, Duterte verbally attacked Carpio after he belittled the 2016 Hague ruling about the Philippines’ victory over China in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
“Supreme Court justice, pareho man tayo abogado. Gusto – eh gusto mo mag-debate tayo?” said the President during his late-night speech.
“Nag-file sila ng kaso, nanalo tayo. ‘Yang papel, sa totoong buhay, between nations, ‘yang papel, wala ‘yan.”
Carpio responded to Duterte’s tirade through a statement saying that he will accept his challenge.
“I gladly accept the challenge anytime at the President’s convenience,” wrote Carpio in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Bar Association (PBA) has offered to host the debate between Duterte and Carpio.
“The Philippine Bar Association (PBA) offers to host this discussion on such date and time as the President and Justice Carpio may agree.
“As the oldest voluntary private organization of lawyers in the country, the PBA will provide a balanced arena fit for two lawyers of eminent stature and experience to dispassionately discuss the core issues relating to the dispute on the West Philippine Sea,” said Rico Domingo, PBA president.

Many are waiting for the President’s response.
TV personality Kiko Rustia even urged Duterte to fulfill his challenge now that Carpio accepted his call for a debate, with PBA willing to host their discussion.
Kumasa na yung hinamon mo.
May nagbigay na din ng venue.
Ano Dututa?

Singer Bituin Escalante also encouraged Duterte to continue with the debate as his way of “redeeming his honor.”
Just this once, ser, gawin niyo yung pinangako niyo. pic.twitter.com/vJ0Bj81CMp

Former Bayan Muna congressman Teddy Casiño even doubted if Duterte would face Carpio in an argument.
— Teddy Casiño (@teddycasino) May 6, 2021
But singer Leah Navarro, though keen to know Duterte’s response, believes that he will be a no-show to the debate.
Naku, abangan natin ang sagot ni Digong! But why bother waiting? Tawag nga sa kanya’y #DuterteDuwag di ba? LOL https://t.co/hye2MO27Vn

Journalist Inday Espina Varona noted that Carpio called Duterte’s challenge a “bluff.” Nevertheless, Varona wants the President to show his arrogance in an intellectual discussion against the retired SC Justice to prove his “actual state of mind.”
Justice Carpio just called Duterte’s debate bluff. Sige, mag-debate na nang mapakita, beyond those staged displays of braggadocio, ang tunay na state of mind.

Forensic expert Raquel Fortun guessed the President could perhaps avoid an argument with Carpio.
Furthermore, Fortun speculated that either he will become Covid-19 positive or have a cardiac arrest.
Paano kaya niya matatakasan yung Carpio debate? Mag covid positive, ICC/cardiac arrest? 🤔

Writer Jerry Grácio attacked the President’s minions, guessing that they are now trying to find an escape plan for Duterte since Carpio accepted the challenge.
— Jerry B. Grácio (@JerryGracio) May 6, 2021
In another tweet, Grácio is thinking about how Malacañang will come up with an explanation about Duterte’s challenge.
Kung makakuda kasi si Duterte ng mga deba-debate… ayan, ikot ang tumbong ng Malacañang kung pa'no to lulusutan. https://t.co/7V1omsawV5

A netizen is certain that Duterte and his minions are “brewing something” so that the President can back out from the debate.

With a possibility that Duterte backs out, a twitter personality turned a photo of Duterte and his Presidential aide, Sen. Bong Go into a meme.
“Bong Go: Boss, bawiin mo ang hamon, tatakbo pa akong President.”

While others are excited for the intellectual fight between Duterte and Carpio, a Netizen commended the former SC Justice for being a “beacon of hope for the majority of Filipinos.”
Dear Justice Carpio: please continue to become a shining beacon of hope for the majority of Filipinos. 16M is not the majority. 97% is fake news. In the coming days, may you and others show the way through the end of the tunnel. Real change must happen before it's too late.

According to Duterte, he will pose only three questions for Carpio, including the controversial pullout of the Philippine Navy in the disputed waters back in 2012.
“Mga dalawa, tatlong tanong lang ako. Sino ang nagpa-retreat? At anong ginawa ninyo after sa retreat? Nag-file ng kaso. Ngayon nanalo. Ma-enforce ba natin? Matulungan ba ninyo ako kung sabihin ninyo sa Amerikano, sabihin ninyo sa France, sabihin ninyo sa Britain, samahan ninyo kami kasi papasok kami. T*** i***** ‘yan,” said Duterte.
Duterte also offered to resign if Carpio or anyone can prove that he was lying in his claims about the WPS issue.
“Ngayon, kung ako ‘yong nagsisinungaling, mag-resign ako bukas kaagad. Iyan ang garantiya ko sa inyo.”
During his tenure as a Justice, Carpio noted in his response that he only knows about the Navy’s withdrawal through the newspapers.
Also, he assured that he was “never involved in the decision to withdraw Philippine Navy ships from the West Philippine Sea during the 2012 Scarborough standoff.”
Thus, Carpio suggested that Duterte should resign as early as now.
“President Duterte should now resign immediately to keep his word of honor.”
