Award-winning veteran Kapuso journalist Jessica Soho has revealed why she doesn’t have personal social media accounts.
In an interview with Howie Severino on the pilot episode of his “The Howie Severino Podcast,” Soho shared her distressing experience with social media.
According to Jessica, she cannot understand the bullying and brazen attitude of netizens who make fun of people’s bodies and weight.
“Remember when they launched the iPad and then some wise guy tweeted, ‘Oh, the iPad, when Jessica Soho holds the iPad, it looks like the iPhone.’ So you know, I was body-shamed for that,” she said.
Soho also shared that she periodically checks the social media accounts of her show Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho to see people’s reactions and comments but she was always reminded by her staff to do away with the practice.
Meanwhile, aside from body shaming, Soho was also concerned with social media’s influence on people to easily believe in fake news.
Jessica said she cannot understand why people would go to social media for news instead of the news website.
“I said, ‘What is this?’ I don’t know how to navigate social media at all. I don’t understand why people are so brazen and so mean. It’s because of this anonymity,” Jessica added.
“People can no longer distinguish between what is the news and what is fake because everything has been mashed up and mixed in peoples’ timelines and status updates,” she said.
Jessica has been often made fun in social media for her weight. She even figured in a controversy with Vice Ganda after the latter used her as an example in one of her jokes during one of his concerts.
