Director Yam Laranas departs from the horror genre in his latest project with Vivamax.
In the virtual media conference for the mystery-love-story film Death of a Girlfriend, director Laranas said that he departs from the horror genre with his Vivamax originals film.
“Technically, parang departure to the previous horror films I made ‘no.”
He then added that he based the movie on a true story, highlighting that he likes eventful, character-driven stories that involve a lot of mystery.
“Based on a true story that happened in France. I like kasi eventful movies, and I like character-driven stories. That’s why kapag napanood niyo, even kahit ‘yung trailer, ‘yung characters nila Diego and AJ are so alive and real. And, it involves a lot of mystery.”
Laranas revealed that the 1950 Japanese psychological thriller/crime film Rashomon by Akira Kurosawa inspired the events in his mystery-love-story film. He then highlights the premise of the movie and the love between the main characters.
“It’s an inspiration. Kaya nga siya naging mystery love-story, what the truth is, what Diego is saying, what the character of AJ is saying. And based on their love story, which is so sweet, here comes these two characters; the forest ranger and the farmer, ito ‘yung parang nanggulo sa love story nila. And, who’s telling the truth. Now we have to find out.”
Finally, he highlights that the mystery genre drew him in because he likes to play with the audience’s minds, and he wants to get them involved in the storytelling.
“I like to play with the minds of the audience. Gusto ko silang maging involved sa storytelling, gusto ko silang nanghuhula, gusto ko silang involved sa mystery. So I like it as a writer and cinematographer. It is more parang for me challenging.”
Laranas, director-writer-cinematographer, is known for his critically acclaimed work for horror films The Echo, The Road, and Aurora.
Now he departs from the supernatural and on to the mystery love story genre with the Vivamax offering, Death of a Girlfriend. The movie stars Diego Loyzaga and Aj Raval. The mystery love story film premieres this April 30, 2021, and will be available through KTX.PH, iWantTFC, TFC IPTV, SKY PPV, and Vivamax.
