A recent survey revealed that a large percentage of Filipinos do have an interest in the news. However, low trust in the kind of news they are consuming.
The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism survey revealed that from January to February 2020, 95 percent of Filipinos indicated an interest in the news. Only 27 percent were found to have trust in the news they consume.
Based on the same survey, 57 percent were concerned about the misinformation online with 44 percent believing that most of the misinformation came from either the government, the politicians, and their respective political parties.
With regard to the news source, the survey revealed that most Filipinos get news online (which includes social media) at 85%, 68 percent meanwhile source their news solely from social media, 66 percent from TV, and 22 percent from print.
Meanwhile, ABS-CBN and GMA Network topped the most popular news brands on and offline.
ABS-CBN prior to its free TV shutdown in May 2020 topped the survey for the most accessed brand getting 61 percent of the respondent accessing them offline (TV and radio) and 54 percent online (ABS-CBN online platforms).
GMA Network meanwhile followed next with 53 percent accessing them offline and 47 percent accessing them online.
Meanwhile, while ABS-CBN topped the most popular brand, GMA Network edges ABS-CBN as the most trusted brand.
GMA Network gets 73 percent trust scores getting the top spot while ABS-CBN landed in the 10th spot with 61 percent. ABS-CBN’s radio station DZMM meanwhile ranked 6th with 67 percent.
