Between stunning cinematic performances with dazzling customized sets and costumes to suit each song, Korean Boy Band BTS made its MTV Unplugged debut last Tuesday, February 23. It made history as the first Korean musical act to feature the acclaimed showcase series.
In a 30-minute show, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook premiered their live renditions of BE tracks such as the deeply emotional Blue & Gray and Telepathy.
But a surprise rendition of Coldplay‘s hit song, Fix You is what caught the hearts of many Filipinos.
After a year of isolation, the rendition of Fix You can be considered a powerfully intimate performance by the biggest band in the world—a rare opportunity to see these young men and their music through the glam of global stardom.
Even Pinoy celebrities were captivated by the performance of the Korean Boy Band. Singer-songwriter and Broadway Diva Lea Salonga can’t help but tweeted about the boy band’s overwhelming performance.
Saw BTS’s MTV Unplugged appearance in full, and it was glorious!!! Band sounded great, the boys sounded and looked great. I can’t name a definitive highlight as the whole thing was so wonderful! @BTS_twt

Lea Salonga even mentioned that she watched the second time’s performance, and BTS’s performance on Fix You is among those who stood out.
Watched again…….. Blue & Grey and Fix You stand out now. My heart! It’s like these two songs are a set: one a reflection of the sadness and pain many of us felt in 2020, and the other a reply of comfort and consolation in 2021. #PassTheKleenex

if coldplay themselves (a group who are EXTREMELY picky about who they permit to cover their songs) not only let bts sing fix you but also complimented it multiple times and posted it over every social media they have then who tf is anyone else to make a comment. nobody cares❤️

In the Philippines, #MTVUnplugged Presents: BTS aired on MTV Asia at 10 a.m. Wednesday at 8:20 p.m. and MTV Live HD at 8:30 p.m.
Even the original band who sang the song, Coldplay, sent all the love to BTS after the K-pop superstars played a surprise cover of 2005’s Fix You on MTV Unplugged.
The British group included a link to the ‘special’ writing ‘beautiful’ in Korean and “Love” in English and the band members’ [individual] initials.
아름다운 @bts_twt 🤍🤍🤍

I’m not a fan of any kpop group but I’m a Coldplay fan, for me these guys sang this song with their hearts on it, just like how Chris would sing this song. BTS did a beautiful performance here.

Late last year, the band got their first major Grammy nomination, and in the summer, their English-language single Dynamite debuted No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 charts.
Their song Life Goes On was also in the top spot of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
BTS wrapped up their show with Life Goes On and thanked their fans.
“We’re looking forward to seeing you again,” Jung Kook said. “Until then, we’re going to stay by your side with good music.”
BTS has performed three times in Manila—in 2014 on the Red Bullet tour, in 2016 on the Epilogue tour, and in 2017 on The Wings tour. – to the Reuters.
