Social media is undoubtedly a powerful indicator of an emerging artist’s popularity, as many star builders, and even advertisers, take cues from online trends, including a number of views, and hashtag trends on Twitter and various social media platforms.
Interestingly, not all popular idol groups, had it in a snap, as some took a while before gaining massive attention.
SB19’ ‘Tilaluha’
Arguably the most popular and most followed local idol group, SB19 released its debut single, Tilaluha, on October 26, 2018. The music video took at least a year before its views crossed the 1 millionth-mark, in October 2019.
It is interesting to note that Tilaluha’s considerably slower pace (compared to MV’s of other SB19 singles), is largely attributed to the fact that the group was just beginning to take off, with the rise of P-Pop, as an emerging OPM subgenre. The music video total accumulated views now stand past 2.3 million.
BGYO’s ‘The Light’
Backed by public hype and massive management support, idol group, the MV of BGYO’s debut song, The Light, took only six days to achieve the milestone, becoming the fastest debut song by a P-Pop act to reach the 1 million mark. Prior to their official launch as BGYO, the group already received media and online attention via appearances on various Kapamilya shows, an advantage the music seemingly benefited from as faithful fans were already gathering before its launch.
1st.One’s ‘You Are The One (Ttak Maja Nuh)’
Released 7 months ago, 1st.One’s debut single, You Are The One, is yet to achieve the feat, but it definitely won’t take very long, as it is just a few clicks away before it surpassed one million views. Now at 995,000 views, the electrifying EDM track is on its way to becoming one of only a few acts to record such milestones.
ALAMAT’s Kbye
9-member-group, ALAMAT, made its debut last month, promising to spice-up P-Pop with their local flavor-infused brand of music. True enough, ‘KBye’, their debut single surprised the growing P-Pop demographic with their vibrant, explosive, and energy-stuffed music video. Featuring a glorious fusion of local and western styles, the group gears up to represent our undying heritage as they join the charge of other P-Pop groups, into the international music scene. Just after three weeks since its release, the music video has already accumulated more than 500,000 views, which is among the fastest for a P-Pop idol act’s debut single.
BoyBandPH’s ‘Unli’
‘We Made It’ may have been BoybandPH’s coronation song, but it’s Unli, that served as their first single to release a music video. Widely regarded now as the first-ever all-male P-Pop group, BoybandPH is comprised of Pinoy Boyband Superstar winners, Ford Valencia, Tristan Ramirez, Niel Murillo, Russell Reyes, and Joao Constancia.
Released in January 2017, Unli crossed past the 1 million mark, just after 36 days.
BINi’s Da Coconut Nut
Star Hunt Academy’s BINi—a 9-member-girl group—released their debut single, Da Coconut Nut, in November 2020. Three months later, the video achieved its first major milestone when its view count surpassed 1,000,000 and has been going up further since. Now being pushed by ABS-CBN management, alongside fellow idol group, BGYO, BINi is looking at a bright future, as it is yet to make its official launch this year.
