Why You Should See It:
GMA Network continues to give the spotlight to its up-and-coming stars, and this time, young dramatic actress, Pauline Mendoza, is the one having her time. The Kambal Karibal star is finally having her first lead role in a teleserye, which also marks her reunion with Carmina Villaroel.
Babawiin Ko Ang Lahat is a beautiful drama about two families torn by a troubled past. Two decades ago, Victor (John Estrada) was abandoned by his wife, Dulce, whose ambitions to seek a better fortune for their kids prompted her to go with her Japanese lover. Devastated and without the resolve to go on, Victor is found by Christine (Tanya Garcia), daughter of the farm owner he works for, and offered him the means to survive. Eventually, Victor and Tanya fell in love with each other and had a daughter—Iris (Pauline Mendoza).
In the present time, Dulce is back in the Philippines, after sustaining misfortunes in Japan. She is now struggling to provide for her two kids, whom she took with her away from Victor; and now she can’t carry the burden of paying her bills and her family’s daily needs. Her life will turn upside down when she meets Victor, who is now a wealthy businessman.
Since this is a family drama, with elements of revenge, jealousy, and everything in between, tension and high emotions are set to motivate its proceedings, and big-sized campy confrontations are expected to take place. Carmina Villaroel’s doing most of the showing-off, so far, with her spectacular demeanors as an ambitious woman who will try everything just to turn things around in her favor. This is the first time—at least in a long while—that the seasoned actress is doing a villain-ish role, which can only affirm her versatility.
Mendoza, after playing a bida-kontrabida role in Kambal Karibal, is challenged by the modest, yet strong-willed and brave, Iris. She takes on the role beautifully, although we need to remember that with strong kontrabida like Trina (Liezel Lopez)—Victor’s daughter with Dulce—around, her character has no other development but to be equally feisty. Babawiin Ko Ang Lahat, is a perfect platform for her to evolve as a capable dramatic actress—a sentiment, Jules Katanyag, the show’s director, similarly echoes.
That being said, Babawiin Ko Ang Lahat, is still burdened by repetitive tropes that countless previous teleseryes already adopted. With it, GMA Network continues to use the rivalry between step-sisters, and rags-to-riches plots, as major motivators in pushing the narrative forward. And while that remains to be a major spectacle to daytime viewers, the fact that Prima Donnas—another Kapuso daytime drama about step-sisters/siblings—just concluded its first season, makes this series immediate debut, a lot to be desired.
Babawiin Ko Ang Lahat now airs on GMA Afternoon Prime, weekdays at 3:25 PM. Watch the trailer below:
