Why You Should See It:
Romance, fantasy, and comedy abound in Chinese drama, Count Your Lucky Stars, starred by the original Dao Ming Si (Yan) and the millennial Shan Cai (Shen Yue), but the main star is their overwhelming chemistry.
The luck is on the fans’ side as two of the most popular Taiwanes/Chinese drama stars unite in a feel-good rom-com that talks about love, fate, and dreams. Perhaps, they must be most thankful for that one scene where Yan flaunted himself half-naked on a bathtub. Kidding aside, the charm of the series comes chiefly from Yan and Yue’s affectionate chemistry, which pours in generously in every kilig moment they share.
In the pilot episode, the series immediately jumps to a scene which is the direct result of an accidental kiss by fashion legend, Calvin Lu, and aspiring designer, Andi Tong. The kiss is said to have prompted Lu’s luck to be passed on Tong, while Tong’s miseries and misfortunes are transferred on to his arrogant boss. The episode sheds light upon events that come prior the anticipated kiss, showing Tong’s early days at the design department, where she plans to fulfill her fashion-designing dreams, which in fact, starts to happen under Lu’s tutelage.
Everything’s dreamy and breezy in the first few episodes. There is a persistent gloom that mainly sheds light on Lu’s dark past, but Tong’s inherent quirk and comic timing gives the overused plot an extra life and allure, to make the fairytale romance she shares with Lu, much more inviting, and to her credit, it does.
