Yesterday, Brillante Mendoza, a critically acclaimed director has posted on his Facebook the reason why most filmmakers fail in the industry.
Showbiz personalities such as Liza Dino-Seguerra, Joey Reyes, and others agreed on what Mendoza posted.
Liza Diño-Seguerra commented, “Mismo!”, agreeing to the post. It’s because the reasons are valid. If a filmmaker is not willing to make sacrifices in the beginning, nor give their all, then they would likely fail. Additionally, a filmmaker’s ego should not control his actions, because it will cloud his judgement.
Director Joey Javier Reyes likewise agreed with the post. He commented, “K O R E K !!! Nothing lasts… if it comes too easily.” Taking the easy road to success does not mean that it will be worth it. Working hard and being passionate is important in any industry.
Former PTV-4 anchor Kirby Cristobal also agrees with the post. He wrote, “I agree Direk.” Not being able to sacrifice anything for something, and getting ahead of one’s self, is doomed to fail.
Filmmaker Mardeon Rayne Gallego described why most people fail as a filmmaker is because they are not after the art, but the money, and the fame.
“This is so true. Kahirap maghanap ng willing to pursue the art kase ‘sabi ni mama, ni partner (o sino pa) na wala din income yan’. Always chasing the money over the art. Filmmaking and acting [are] so fun and daming matutunan,” commented Gallego.
Filmmaker Luis Pedron can also relate to the post. In his comment, he wrote, “So True. Funny how it seems,” referring to most filmmakers who were out there chasing air because they want fame and fortune.
And because many filmmakers would like to take the easy road and feel entitled, Jaime Garchitorena roasted directors who failed. He said, “I thought it was mostly because they had no talent.”

However, award-winning director Avid Liongoren stressed that not willing to work for free is something that filmmakers do in the beginning. The reason is that it justifies worker abuse.
“[No.] 1 justifies a lot of industry worker abuse though,” Liongoren wrote.
Even now, in the industry where a person is working for the sake of art, the post serves as a “don’t” list for filmmakers out there.
