Song Joong-Ki who played Captain Yoo Si Jin in the hit drama Descendants of the Sun now plays an intelligent pilot in Korea’s first sci-fi film Space Sweepers.
During a virtual media conference hosted by Netflix, Song Joong-Ki admitted that upon reading the script for the film, he felt nostalgic.
“I was more excited. I felt like I was a child again. When I first read the script, it reminded me of when I was a young kid,” said the actor.
Moreover, he recalled the 1985 American adventure-comedy film ‘Goonies‘ which had the same feeling as to how they made ‘Space Sweepers‘—spectacular. According to the actor, ‘Goonies‘ was such an amazing film and this first-ever sci-fi film of Korea is yet another sensational masterpiece.
“You know the movie ‘Goonies‘? It was such an amazing adventure film, and that is exactly how I felt. You know, it was yet another amazing adventure but only taking place in outer space. The excitement at the beginning of the adventure,” Song Joong-Ki added.
Space Sweepers is set in the year 2092, a time when the Earth is barely inhabitable. It tells the story of a spaceship crew who sells space junk for a living. Their life takes an unexpected turn when they discover a mysterious cybernetic being who, as they learn later on, is a weapon of mass destruction.
When the crew learned about this, apart from knowing that the being is wanted by the UTS Space Guards, they then decide to strike a profitable deal.
In the movie, Song Joong-Ki plays the intelligent pilot Kim Tae-ho of spaceship Victory, a member of what to be considered misfits of outer space who is quick-witted in crucial situations. However, he is not happy with his life.
Space Sweepers is directed by Jo Sung-hee, the man behind A Werewolf Boy and Phantom Detective.
The movie, which is the first Korean blockbuster on Netflix will have its premiere on February 6.
