In an interview, Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray agreed with Vice President Leni Robredo and Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Rabiya Mateo‘s answer to President Rodrigo Duterte‘s statement about women being unfit for the Presidency.
Catriona said that gender doesn’t determine a person’s capacity to be a leader.
“I don’t think your capacity to be a leader (is) determined by your gender,” said Catriona.
Gray added that a person’s capabilities, skills, and talents define one’s capacity to be a leader.
“I think it(‘s) defined by the capabilities, skills, and talents that you have. Your experience, your character, I think all of those play a part, to be a good leader. It does not depend on one’s gender at all,” said Catriona.
Recently, Pres. Duterte stated that women are unfit for the Presidency due to the gender’s emotional set-up.
Pres. Duterte’s earlier remark was his response to the rumors of the possible Presidential bid of his daughter, Mayor Sara Duterte.
It earned backlash from Netizens for its misogynistic undertones.
VP Leni refuted President Duterte and cited the outstanding female leaders in the world.
Mateo also responded to the President and said that women are as capable as men when handling a nation.
Contrary to Duterte’s claim on women being unfit to lead, women leaders such as New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen have effectively responded to the COVID-19 crisis, with less than 3000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic and less than 30 COVID-19 related deaths.
