Kapamilya actor Jameson Blake takes on a BL (Boy’s Love) genre role for the first time in My Lockdown Romance.
In an interview regarding his movie, he admitted that he was hesitant at first but eventually he accepted the role.
He did set some limitations when it comes to intimate scenes.
“I set some limits. They know that din. Siguro I just put a limit sa intimate bed scenes. Siguro things lesser than that would be okay for me. Siguro just for a start and good thing knowing this project is not as heavy like that. That’s one of the reasons why I accepted the movie,” Jameson said.
The actor is very optimistic about how the BL genre would change the perception of people when it comes to love. Since romantic movies where a boy falls in love with a girl or vice versa is becoming more of a cliché, the BL genre gives an another take on what it feels falling in love—in a homosexual way.
“I think it is also a great opportunity to tell more love stories in different ways. We hope that people will relate to what we give. Yun lang naman, we are just giving more entertainment and more inspiration to people,” he said.
As to how the LGBTQIA+ community would react to straight men portraying a gay role, he understands that it is a sensitive matter. However, he emphasized that it is part of their work and they are only doing their job—to play the character.
“Well kasi we understand naman na that’s a sensitive matter. And taking those kind of roles is sensitive and could impact the views of the viewers basically. Pero you’ll have to come to think of it na we are actors. We’re supposed to play someone that we’re not. You don’t get a real superman to play superman. It’s really different, it’s our job to tell the story, to play the character. Yun lang naman sa side namin if that’s what they say, that’s our side as actors,” Jameson said.
One thing he learned while doing the film is that reconnecting with people is very important. Moreover, he also realized that what you do while being alive matters. So for all who are living Y.O.L.O., the pandemic is a good example that your time should be taken seriously.
“Take time seriously. ‘Coz the movie is also about reconnecting with people. And I think it’s important for us din na we don’t waste time. Kasi you’ll never know when it’s too late na. And since the movie is during the pandemic, it’s also like a great time to like reconnect, to reach out, to anyone,” the actor said.
Jameson also added, “To your friends, to your family, and give them some time to catch up and I think that’s really important din in life.”
The BL Genre
The BL Genre or ‘Yaoi’ is very popular in countries like Thailand and Japan. When this genre became popular, Filipino producers took the risk of introducing BL dramas in the Philippines. However, since the country is a conservative one, it will take more than just one good BL movie to be accepted by Filipinos in general.
Apart from possible cultural concerns and issues with the local censors, Filipino soap operas are collective stories: they’re usually centered on romance, but they’re also about family, community, and country.
Manwhile, BL dramas focus on the personal. This genre tends to view love as an individualistic concern.
No matter, the point of artists in doing this kind of genre is to actually spread awareness regarding the LGBTQIA+ community.
For some, watching BL genres instead of heterosexual ones is refreshing.
