In an interview with Korina Sanchez for One PH, hosts Ed Lingao, Patrick Paez, Lourd de Veyra, Melvyn Calderon, Jove Francisco, and Manuel Mogato got to ask the veteran broadcaster about her thoughts on her new show on TV5, Rated Korina.
Host Lourd de Veyra got the opportunity to ask what Korina’s thoughts on Rated Korina‘s present competing programs.
The veteran broadcaster politely said that in this time of pandemic, competition is not present as she feels that everyone’s priority is to find a safe spot to improve lives.
“Kumpetisyon? Well, you know, I think, because of the pandemic, because of social media, because of the temporary demise of ABS-CBN, I think competition will now be redefined. People are still struggling to find their place again.”
Also, competition isn’t what Korina is focusing on as she believes that quality is more important.
“And even when we think we’re in [new] normal, since thirty years ago, hanggang ngayon, talagang ang style ko talaga ay hindi kumpetisyon, kung hindi talagang maglabas lang ng pinakamagaling na kakayanin ko.
“Parang, I really just compete with myself. I hardly look left and right in everything or anything I do. So, even in television, ang lahat ng kakumpetisyon ko ay kaibigan ko sila.”
Korina said that she believes they had the first and original idea of this kind of show.
“And I would like to think na ako yung kinokopya. Hahaha! I would like to think na original yung konsepto namin.”
Rated K first premiered in May 2004. Six months later, GMA-7 launched Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho in November 2004. But before Rated K, Korina had News K from 1996 to 2001.
“It was successful, ‘yon yung ginagaya ‘no. Pero minsan, mas magaling talaga sila, kung minsan kami pa rin. Pero it’s really about reinventing yourself over and over and over again. And getting ahead of yourself. You know, as we talk about certain things that have to change, there are certain things also that should not change.
“And I think, we’ll always be constant sa trabaho namin bilang mamamahayag and creatures of television—we will tell the stories as they are. Yun ang isang bagay ina pinagmamalaki namin hanggang ngayon.”
As of now, Korina has finished their first episode for Rated Korina, she even gave a glimpse of one of the stories that they will feature, “We are done with our first episode. We shot, we look for the stories, and I particularly told my team, ‘You cannot look for stories online, ha, you have to look stories the traditional way as it was before. You go out there and ask around kung ano yung wala pa online.’
“Ito naman, van dweller ‘yan, isang babae na nagdesisyong tumira sa loob ng kanyang van. She has been living in that van for nearly three years.”
