MANILA, October 2020 – Just like the rest of us, December Avenue expressed how surprised and anxious they were about going into lockdown. “We’re not really used to staying at home kasi last year, we were always on tour and it’s very hard coping up kasi we felt very anxious about the situation na we’re clueless about the future of live music,” they shared.
Staying at home, December Avenue devoted their time to learning new things, from recording music on their own to enrolling in courses online. “Naadik din sa gaming,” they admitted. What game, you might ask? Mobile Legends.
Excited over being part of Coke Studio this year, December Avenue shared how being able to continue working and having the support of the people around them are reasons why they feel good. “Malamig na Coke sa ref dahil mainit ngayon,” they spontaneously added when talking about what makes them feel good.
December Avenue has been creating music for a decade already, which is something they have been very passionate about. They feel the happiest when they hear their fans sing along with them during their live performances. “Ang goal lang namin before was to be heard. Never namin na-imagine na once we’re on stage, lahat kakanta na.”
During a certain point in their career, December Avenue made the conscious decision to shift from creating English music to Tagalog. “Tagalog songs are easy to connect with the people. We had to make sure na broad ‘yong market and reach ng material namin. Since nasa Pilipinas tayo, gusto namin ‘yong makaka-relate sila. Mas madali maka-connect in Tagalog, mas madali intindihin.”
In addition to knowing how their fans relate to their music, the group used this inspiration to continue working on honing their craft. “Kasi musika talaga ang passion namin eh, ito ang rason kung bakit kami nagkakilala; ito rin ang rason kung bakit hindi kami sumuko. And to be able to share this sa mga tao, isang malaking karangalan.” When asked about their secret in staying together as a group, they said, “As long as healthy naman the relationship within the group and we have the same vision, ayun, ‘yon ‘yong nagpa-stay sa amin together.
