At a press conference, actress Marian Rivera reacted to the news that the Darna movie has been shelved due to the pandemic. Marian previously played Darna in a TV series.
She believes that Darna’s production will continue once the pandemic is over and everyone has recovered.
“Pero syempre dahil lang sa pandemic. For sure naman yan pag nakabwelta naman yan itutuloy yan. Di naman pwedeng hindi itutuloy literally. Di ba? For sure itutuloy pa rin yan, di lang siguro sa ngayon,” said Marian.
Kapamilya star Jane De Leon was set to take on the mantle of the Pinay superheroine. Despite the studio starting with production last January, ABS-CBN shelved the film in August 2020 due to its big-budget and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Before the pandemic, Liza Soberano was set to play the superheroine. The actress declined because of health reasons. Angel Locsin also backed out due to health reasons when the studio offered her to reprise her role as Darna.
The film initially had Erik Matti at the helm to spearhead the production, but the studio and Matti parted ways in 2018. After that, director Jerrold Tarog took over. They started filming back in January 2020 before Darna got shelved.
Recently Zia Dantes, the daughter of Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes, trended on social media when she donned a Darna costume. This photo spurred talks of Zia being the next Darna when she grows up.
Marian said that it would be up to Dingdong if they will allow Zia to take up the mantle of Darna.
“Yung tatay nya kausapin mo, dahil ako kahit ano ako basta gusto ng anak ko walang problema, si Dong ang very sensitive pagdating kay Zia,” said Marian.
