ABS-CBN supporters are gearing towards ramping up their signature campaign for the ABS-CBN franchise.
The National Union of Journalists in the Philippines (NUJP) which mostly led the campaigns for ABS-CBN said they are set to put up pop-up display along Sgt. Esguerra Avenue in Quezon City to allow more people to participate in the signature campaign.
“It’s a gargantuan task pero napakalaki rin naman ng ating tagumpay kung sakali man maisulong itong people’s initiative,” said NUJP Sec.Gen. Raymund Villanueva.
“Maipapakita natin na ang tama ang magwawagi, ang hustisya ang mamamayani,” he added.
PIRMA Kapamilya campaign was launched by People’s Initiative for Reforms and Movement (PIRMA) on July 24 with the aim of bringing back ABS-CBN on-air via People’s Initiative.
The group which is composed of volunteer citizens, lawyers, professors, businessmen, and advocates is also set to do a house to house campaign to let Kapamilya supporters sign the petition while following COVID-19 health protocols.
“Hindi makatarungan na ipasara ang ABS-CBN sa mga isyu na nasagot naman,” said UP Professor and one of PIRMA’s convenors Herminio “Third” Bagro III.
Bagro also said that the decision of the 70 congressmen to deny ABS-CBN a franchise is “unfair and unjustified” that’s why Filipinos should now take the matters in their own hands.
Another PIRMA convenor Allan Pangilinan meanwhile assured the supporters that consent would be freely and voluntarily given. Personal information of those who will sign in the People’s Initiative will also be secured and protected.
“We will also be mindful of health concerns because of the pandemic… And we will be transparent and accountable,” said Pangilinan.
People’s Initiative is one of the methods available in the constitution to pass a law without passing through congress.
According to the law, for people’s initiative to be successful, it needs at least 3% signatures of all registered voters from each legislative district of the country and at least 10% of the total registered voting population.
