Frankie Pangilinan has called out bible-citing legislators who support and push for the reinstatement of the death penalty in the country.
In a tweet, the outspoken young singer slammed lawmakers who ironically opposed gay rights and or divorce due to bible teachings and yet pushes for the death penalty law.
“Why is it that the ones who love to cite bible verses when it comes to gay rights or divorce are the same ones [pro-death] penalty like yes pick and choose your values when you want them to apply pa more, sis.”
Frankie shared a photo of the authors of the death penalty law which includes Senators Manny Pacquiao and Tito Sotto and Rep. Benny Abante who are known to be bible-citing lawmakers when it comes to what they call anti-bible measures like the gay rights, divorce, and reproductive health law.
Although not in the photo, Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano who in his speeches and press releases has always included bible verses also supports Duterte’s call for the death penalty to be passed.
“Ano ba basis mo to oppose? Because of your religious beliefs or because of the Constitution? Siguro naman the Constitution allows death penalty for heinous crimes,” Pacquiao said in one of his interviews in defense of the death penalty law.
And then sa Panginoon, biblically, binibigyan ng Panginoon ng karapatan ang government to use capital punishment. Even Jesus Christ nga nasentensyahan nang kamatayan dahil ang government nag-impose talaga ng kamatayan,” he added

However, the same Pacquiao opposed the SOGIE (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression Equality) bill saying he believes that it is against what the bible teaches.
“Even in the Bible, we can read na ang babae, dapat magsuot na pambabae; at ang lalaki, magsuot ng panlalaki. That’s what I believe,” Pacquiao said.
During President Rodrigo Duterte’s 5th State of the Nation Address, he mentioned that one of his administration’s priority measures in his remaining days in office is the reimposition of the death penalty.
It can be remembered that it was one of Duterte’s campaign promises and he already mentioned it several times in his public addresses.
The House of Representatives has already passed a version of the law in February 2017, however, it failed to gain enough support in the Senate.
With, Duterte’s new directives resurrecting the death penalty law, Congress is again expected to swiftly pass it. However, the Senate will be again a different ball game.
