Bernadette Sembrano announced her retrenchment as a Field Reporter. In her Facebook video post this August 25, 2020, Sembrano officially confirmed that she is a part of the 11,000 employees who lost their jobs due to ABS-CBN’s shutdown.
Here is the video of the reporter breaking the news via her Facebook account.
According to Sembrano, her superior broke the news at noon. This was after receiving good news about their membership with FILSCAP (The Filipino Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers Inc.) in the morning.
Sembrano highlighted the irony of her receiving good news in the morning and then hearing a ‘not so good news’ in the afternoon.
“Masakit din but this isn’t the first time that this happened to me that I was enjoying the morning and then pagdating ng hapon medyo not so good news. So kung may kirot, may kirot. Kung may sakit, may sakit. Ang sabi ko galing talaga ni God magbalanse ng buhay,” said Sembrano.
Sembrano alongside Korina Sanchez and Ces Drilon, have all been let go from ABS-CBN due to the issues surrounding the network’s franchise renewal and shutdown.

Sembrano began her career as a newscaster with IBC 13 in 1997 and moved to GMA7 in 1998. She gained prominence as the host of the public affairs show Wish ko Lang! In an episode of the investigative documentary The Probe Team in 2003, Sembrano exposed the alleged graft and corruption of a government official under ex-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. The network decided against airing the documentary because they did not get enough validation about the allegations. This prompted Sembrano to walk out of Saksi, earning her a suspension from the network.
After completing her run with Wish ko Lang! in 2004, she resigned from GMA7 and received an offer with ABS-CBN in the same year.
Sembrano became a part of the ABS-CBN News team in which she became an award-winning news reporter, anchor, and host of multiple programs of the network. Here are some of the awards she garnered over the years with ABS-CBN:
