Netizens who anticipated a different SONA directed by Joyce Bernal ended up disappointed with a ‘flop’ coverage.
Several netizens slammed Bernal for a lackluster coverage short of her promised “Pinoy na Pinoy” and a SONA with a different flavor after covering the annual address for 3 years.

Prior to Duterte’s 5th State of the Nation Address, SONA director Bernal promised a different SONA which according to her will have a “different flavor” that is very Filipino.
“Dahil parang sumimple siya, pero naging complicated siya technically because di ko alam kung nalimit yung mga tao dito sa loob pero merong mga remote areas na kailangan kong kunan. Yung video conference meron akong IT na gagawa, kasi di ako marunong sa ganyan. Pero pag-aaralan ko na yun on the day itself na. Bukas lockdown na ito eh. On the day itself na technical rehearsal ko.”
The promise, however, wasn’t realized as netizens blasted the director after watching the Duterte’s SONA.

Meanwhile, Bernal already caught the attention of the netizens prior to the SONA.
She and her group which included Piolo Pascual made to the headlines after they were denied access to Sagada.
On July 6, Piolo, Bernal, and other friends went to Sagada to shoot for the upcoming SONA of President Rodrigo Duterte. The group however was denied by the Sagada Municipal Council due to COVID-19 safety protocols.
The group ended going back to Baguio where they did the shoot after passing through the LGUs triage procedure.
Aside from being known Duterte supporter, Bernal was known in the film industry for her comedy and rom-com films.
Some of her works include Eugene Domingo’s Kimi Dora film series, Vice Ganda’s The Super Parental Guardians and Gandarrappido: The Revenger Squad; D’ Anothers; Mr. Suave; Angel Locsin and Vilma Santos’ Everything About Her and her latest Sarah Geronimo’s Miss Granny.
