On Friday, July 3, Duterte signed into law the controversial anti-terror the same day when DOH recorded the highest number of additional COVID-19 positive cases.
Duterte’s signing was confirmed by DILG Sec. Ano and was later confirmed by Exec. Sec. Medialdea.
Meanwhile, proponents of the measure led by Sen. Ping Lacson lauded the President for his political will to sign the controversial bill despite strong criticisms and opposition from different fronts.
Many critics have voiced out their opposition to the bill because of the vagueness of some of its provisions that can be easily abused by the authorities.
The Deputy Executive Secretary for Legal Affairs has also pointed out “strong cautionary comments” from within the Cabinet about certain provisions based on its legal review and recommendation.
Even UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet called on President Duterte not to sign the bill over fears of its weaponization against gov’t dissent and criticism.
Meanwhile, here are other reactions from celebrities regarding Duterte’s signing of anti-terror bill.
