June 5th, 2020 – Singapore – In late February, Weird Genius joined forces with singer/rapper Sara Fajira to release their smash hit “Lathi”. With the EDM trio’s signature blend of pumping bass and traditional Javanese sonic elements, the song quickly rose to the top of the charts in Indonesia.
On TikTok, the song sparked the #LathiChallenge, inspired by their haunting music video, which saw countless of content creators across Asia participating. The hashtag has now racked up over 130 million views and counting.
The song shot to #1 on every major streaming platform in Indonesia – Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, TikTok, Resso, Joox and iTunes. “Lathi” soon entered Spotify Viral Charts, peaking at #2 on Global, #1 on Malaysia and charting similarly in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. The track also reached the #1 spot on Spotify Indonesia’s Top 50 Chart for over two weeks, outperforming megastars such as Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Melanie Martinez. As of today, “Lathi” is at the #1 spot on iTunes in Malaysia as well.
Weird Genius was formed in 2016 by Reza Oktovian, Eka Gustiwana and Gerald Liu. The dance supergroup has continued to grow their fanbase over the years, earning them spots on the lineups of coveted shows and festivals, such as YouTube’s Viral Fest in Bangkok in 2017 and supporting The Chainsmokers in 2018. Shortly after their performance at the Indonesian Billboard Music Awards show this year, the global pandemic forced them to cancel their highly-anticipated Asia tour. While the dancefloors, unfortunately, remained empty, the meteoric rise of their club-focused track “Lathi” on the charts has proven the trio to be unstoppable.
