Israeli singer-songwriter VANNA releases new single ‘Let Me Fall’

Umami Records Singapore’s very own VANNA has finally released the second single from her upcoming 5-track EP, High Hopes.

Titled “Let Me Fall,” the Israeli artist navigates a brooding, downtempo sound with production from indie-electronic trio Garden City Movement and mastering by Matt Colton (James Blake, Muse, Coldplay).

Enveloped with trip-hop elements and ethereal percussions, the latest track builds on a somber and emotional mood, while immersing to the feeling of being in love and vulnerable at the same.

LionhearTV recently caught up with the indie singer-songwriter to talk about her highly anticipated new release.

What is the story behind your new single Let Me Fall?

When you fall in love, you expose yourself to getting hurt. It’s an endless paradox. When you let someone enter your inner world, you’re allowing them to gently break down your walls and then amazing things can happen. I was scared that one day I’d lose this feeling, and when it really happened I felt so alone trying to move on. This is the risk you take for falling in love. This song is about letting go of that fear, embracing that vulnerability, and letting yourself fall in love completely.

How did you write this song?

At one of my gigs I did a cover of RY X’s Deliverance, adding a minimal beat and playing on my keyboard. When I finished singing the cover I kept going with the beat and sang a new song, which became Let Me Fall. It was a special moment. After I finished singing I told the audience that I felt like a rapper improvising lyrics on the go. I said I hoped that someone in the audience recorded it because this would become my new song. So yeah, I can thank RY X for inspiring me!

What’s your favourite part of the song?

The bridge leading up to the instrumental break at the end of the song, I feel that these parts are the climax of the song musically. Singing the high notes and building up the tension before the release of the instrumental drop. It really symbolizes the freedom of falling in love, when you are letting go and you stop being afraid of getting hurt, and you just open up your heart to fulfill this feeling completely.

What makes this song special to you?

This is one of my more upbeat songs, and for the first time, I was trying to get out of my comfort zone, to sing high notes. Before, I was scared of singing loud or high notes, and this song reflects the personal progress I had made. After years of lacking confidence, my voice teacher made me realize that it’s OK to sing high, to sing open, to be more out there with my voice and to stop hiding it with low notes. Since then I discovered a whole new range for my voice and how I can use it to add deeper layers to my music.

What did you want to share with your audience through this song?

I feel that this song reflected the emotional process I had in relationships – from all the dark sides of being scared of getting hurt, through to the amazing feeling of falling in love. Musically, it’s really about building up the energy from the verses to the choruses, culminating in the bridge and releasing all that tension in the final instrumental drop, letting go of being scared all the time.
