No Charot, Ethel Booba can be held legally liable after disowning Twitter account

While Ethel Booba’s disownment of “her” famous Twitter account meant to be a convenient move for her because of the politics involved, some netizens find it legally incovenient.

After Ethel’s revelation last week that the hugely followed @IAmEthylGabison is not hers even tagging it as fake, netizens floated a problematic angle for Ethel as she may be held legally liable for coming out and disowning the account.

Netizen @RonanInManila in a tweet said while Ethel’s decision to come out as a DDS and distancing herself from the political tweets of her former account, her claiming authorship of a book which was totally based on the tweets was illegal.

“I believe ‘Ethel Booba’. She’s a Duterte supporter, she always was, she took advantage of someone else’s work for her personal benefit until it became inconvenient. Nothing to be proud of, yet nothing illegal. But she signed a book she didn’t write. And that is illegal.”

Lawyer Jesus Falcis has also brought up Ethel’s book “Charotism” which according to him all profits should be returned to the writer of the tweets published on the book.

“Please return the profits you made from your book “Charotisms” because it is based on a fake twitter account, @EthelBooba6 . 2016 pa lang may political tweets na, ngayon ka lang nag disassociate. The hypocrisy!”

Falcis even discuss it in length in a Facebook post titled “THE PROFITABLE BETRAYAL OF ETHEL BOOBA”

In the post, Falcis laid down all the premises that Ethel could have illegally profited from the Twitter account that she now disowned.

According to the lawyer, the twitter account gave her showbiz gigs and the best selling book “Charotism” which contains all of the tweets from the @IAmEthylGabison twitter account. With her revelation, it can be implied that she profited from a fraud after claiming that she has nothing to do with the account.

“She claims such account is fake and yet for more than 4 years of tweets since 2016, she only disassociates from it now.

“After years of guesting on tv and years of positive write-ups about Ethel Booba and her twitter account, where she has gone on record to say that such twitter account was hers and that the tweets have her approval,” he said.

“She has profited from such “fake” twitter account through renewed fame and guesting. I rooted for her in Tawag ng Tanghalan because of her renewed fame through such twitter account. But more problematic, she profited from such tweets when she promoted and earned from her book “Charotisms”, a compilation of her tweets,” he added.

Ethel recently came out disowning the famous Twitter account. On Tuesday, April 14, Ethel also posted a video on her YouTube channel addressing the burning issue about her and “her previous” Twitter account.

In a YouTube video, Ethel said she decided to come out and reveal that she is not behind the account because of too much politicking which is tarnishing her and her family’s reputation.

The @IAmEthylGabison twitter account was popular for its witty and humorous take on socio-political issues which often ending with Ethel’s signature line, “Charot!”
