In an interview with CNN, Sorsogon Governor Chiz Escudeo reiterated the proactive measures he has done to maintain the province free of the pandemic COVID-19 cases.
On March 15, 2020, Escudero complied with President Rodrigo Duterte’s order of an enhanced community quarantine. Since then, Sorsogon has 18,000 persons under monitoring (PUM), and 400 persons under investigation (PUI) and fortunately the province was able to decrease the numbers of PUM to 200 while from 400 PUI is now down to four.
Escudero revealed: “Nagsimula ang lalawigan nung March 15, 18,000 PUM mahigit kumulang 400 na PUI. Sa ngayon bumaba na ‘yan sa kulang-kulang 200 na PUM at apat na PUI at nanatiling zero positive case ang lalawigan ng Sorsogon, awa ng Diyos.”
To ensure that only 2% of their population will be allowed to leave their homes to buy necessities, Escudero implemented province-wide ECQ pass.
Though they have filed a falsification case against some suspects who created a fake ECQ pass, the former senator reiterated that the Sorsogon community was complying with his policies.
Escudero: Nagkaroon kami ng province-wide ECQ pass kung saan hindi isang household kada isa, kung hindi 1 is to 50. Humigit kumulang 2% lamang ng aming population at any one time ang makakalabas.

He said: “Pinagpapasa-pasahan ung ECQ pass para makalabas ang susunod naman, para ma tiyak na limitado ang bilang ng aming kababayan ang makakalabas. Dalawa o tatlong beses yata may nahuli kami nagtutupada at nahuli ng pulis ‘yun at sinampahan ng karampatang kaso pero maliban don walang halos lumalabag sa ECQ mismo. May ilan nameke ng ECQ pass namin sinampahan ng kaso ng falsification.”
Construction work in Sorsogon are still on-going as the governor is eyeing to establish six hospitals in the province. In addition to that, Escudero permitted tricycles to operate as service for the health personnel, not to be mistaken as going against the rule. Escudero emphasized that Duterte has ordered a halt to public transportation but hiring or renting tricycle services are excluded.
“Pinayagan rin namin ang point to point ng pag gamit ng tricycle at jeep, ang pinagbawal ay public transport subalit hindi ipinag bawal ang renta o hire o contractual ng mga tricycle, jeep. Para naman magkaroon kahit paano ng hanapbuhay ung aming kababayan. Ginamit rin namin sila para sa transportation ng aming health personnel.”
In the same interview, the Sorsogon Governor admitted that he did not undergo self-quarantine and what was really is effective to him is the rapid test kits which DOH failed to consider and approve until now.
Meanwhile, Escudero also warns his constituents that patients who fail the dishonesty ordinance will face a year of imprisonment and a Php5,000.00 penalty.
While Chiz is busy with his constituents, his wife Heart consistently provided help to fellow Filipinos like providing funds for a netizen to buy grocery items for her grandfather.
