Actress Cherry Pie Picache is worried about the health of prisoners in this time of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The actress expressed her opinion and appeal via her Instagram page as she posted a photo of prisoners jam-packed in a cell.
Picache requested that uniformed personnel should stop arresting homeless people since prison cells are now full beyond capacity.
“Pakiusap sa mga kinauukulan: Wag na po sana manghuli ng mga homeless, vendors, the least of our brethren… isa pa, punong puno na po ang mga kulungan. ”
For Picache, assistance and aid, such as food, clothing, and shelter to the poor should be #1 concern in this time of crisis.
“Sana paliwanagan, assistance, tulungan, sana mag laan ng facility kung saan sila pwedeng dalhin at i-quarantine.”
Also, the actress hopes that we have empathy and help each other.
“Katulad natin, lahat iniisip ang pamilya na may makakain at the least. Mahirap pero kaya naman siguro, tulong tulong lang. Marami naman ang nagshashare. ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏 #prisonersarepeopletoo #radicallove #leastofourbrothers #loveandcompassionforallbeings #amdg”
Last Tuesday, The President ordered an “enhanced community quarantine” in eight regions and advised citizens to stay home to help reduce the number of COVID-19 cases in the world.
From stopping public transport to banning public gatherings, this will be a factor in slowing down the number of cases in the country. But at the same time, daily wage earners will be unable to earn a living and will have no means to support themselves.
The Philippine National Police clarified that they can not arrest someone for breaching emergency public health measures. They can block you, and prohibit you from entering, but they can’t arrest you.
If the PNP has succumbed to arresting people who are trying to breach emergency health measures, this may add to the number of prisoners in prison cells, which will defeat the purpose of social distancing.
The World Health Organization gave basic protective measures against this new coronavirus, it advised the public to maintain social distancing at least 1 meters (3 feet) distance between yourself and others, especially to those who cough or sneeze.
