- ABS-CBN stars started asking support for signature campaign.
Many expected that after Congress’ resumption last Monday, January 20, the ABS-CBN franchise renewal bills would finally move forward.
But, the Committee on Legislative Franchises has yet to start the deliberation as it wasn’t included in their agenda.
According to a report by CNN Philippines, Speaker Alan Cayetano wanted to expedite the passage of bills creating a Department of Disaster Resilience, Department of Water Resources, and the Department of Overseas Filipino Workers.
Although there are only 21 regular sessions left and Committee on Legislative Franchises has yet to calendar the hearing for ABS-CBN franchise renewal, Cayetano said that there is still enough time to tackle the renewal.
According to Cayetano, Congress will conduct a fair hearing on ABS-CBN’s franchise, getting inputs from all the sides of the fence.
Meanwhile, as the time ticks away, concerns about the impending renewal get even bigger.
Last January 17, journalists groups led by the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) staged their Black Friday protest at the Boy Scout Monument in Quezon City to call on Congress to act on the Kapamilya network’s franchise renewal.
Aside from that, several big stars from the Kapamilya network have also started calling for people’s support for their signature campaign.
In a series of tweets, Kapamilya stars Lea Salonga, Anne Curtis, Vice Ganda, and Ogie Alcasid asked their followers to sign the petition to renew ABS-CBN’s franchise.
Yes, I have personal and professional reasons for this one. Not gonna lie. https://t.co/tuj4QWvquu
