Host-comedian Vic Sotto shared his take on the state of comedy in the country.
In an article by PUSH, Bossing Vic talked about how important comedy films are in a festival like Metro Manila Film Festival.
According to him, comedy films add variety to the festival and are essential so that people have a choice from several genres.
“Pare-pareho lang ‘yan, kaya nga tayo nag-o-offer, nang comedy, drama, action, rom-com, indie, iba-iba ang taste nang manonood e.
“Hindi naman din pwede na o puro drama tayo ngayon, kailangan iba iba ang ihahain natin tapos sa kabuuan, maganda ang kalalabasan ng festival,” he said.
He also differentiated “nakakatawa” at “nagpapatawa”. He said, he made it a point for his movies to be funny in itself without exerting effort to be funny.
“Ako I always go for nakakatawa at hindi nagpapatawa,” aniya. “Iba ‘yung nagpapatawa sa nakakatawa for me, mas gusto ko ‘yung nakakatawa ‘yung eksena nakakatawa ‘yung tao, hindi ‘yung pinapatawa mo ako.
“Sa akin, ibang iba ‘yun, ayaw na ayaw ko ‘yung nagpapatawa eh gusto ko ‘yung nakakatawa,” he added.
Sotto is known to be one of the most sought after actors during MMFF. His previous movies have always been contenders for the top spot in box office results.
But currently, his MMFF 2019 entry Mission Unstapabol: The Don Identity is ranked 4th in the unofficial box office rankings for the festival’s first day of showing.
Vice Ganda meanwhile remains as the box office leader for his movie The Mall The Merrier with Anne Curtis.
Just recently Vice also slammed people who keep on criticizing comedy films especially his films entering MMFF as basura comedy.

“Kailangan i-call out din natin na mali ho yung mababang tingin niyo sa comedy, na kinukuwestiyon ninyo ang kahalagahan ng comedy sa pelikula at sa buhay in general. Since call out culture nga, i-call out natin sila at dapat siguro sa tulong ninyo, maaring ipaliwanag ninyo sa kanila kung bakit mahalaga at legit ang comedy, especially sa Pasko, lalo na sa Pilipinas.
“Kailangan ng Pilipinas ng comedy, at kailangan ng Pilipinas ang komedyante. Sabi ko nga, sana walang mamatay na komedyante sa Pilipinas, kasi nakakalungkot kapag nabawasan ng komedyante ang Pilipinas, comedy is very important,” said Vice.
