- Magpakailanman celebrates seven years on air.
- Mel Tiangco is happy every time Magpakailanman beats Maalaala Mo Kaya.
News anchor and Kapuso host Mel Tiangco shared how she feels whenever Magpakailanman edges out rival Maalaala Mo Kaya.
During the presscon for the GMA drama anthology’s seventh anniversary, Tiangco gave an honest answer when asked how she feels whenever they beat the rival program.
“Ikaw naman di syempre masaya,” Mel candidly answered.
“Siyempre masaya yun ano, pero pag nakikita ko na ganun I will be honest with you, parang navivindicate ako.
“Navivindicate yung, you know yung nakalipas ko. Unang-una yung tinigil sya.Tinigil ang Magpakailanman eh diba, and even at that time we were doing very well I just couldnt understand what was going on. Bat ganun bat tinigil.
“But then it came back, so I will be honest parang navindicate ako na ano ba yun, mali ba yung tinigil nila? Or something like that. But then on the other hand, siyempre nasisiyahan ako nang ganun,” Mel added.
Magpakailanman is currently on its seventh year.
It was originally launched in December 2002 to compete with ABS-CBN’s longest-running drama anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya. At that time Magpakailanman proved to be a worthy opponent as it toppled MMK in the ratings several times.
Magpakailanman was also able to dictate the tempo as MMK followed Magpakailanman’s trend of showcasing stories of celebrities and known personalities in lieu of its normal format of reliving the life stories of ordinary people.
But after six years on air, GMA decided to cancel the show in 2008.
After four years, since MMK continued to dominate its timeslot, GMA Network again decided to revive Magpakailanman in November 2012.
Up to know, the show continues to pose threat to MMK when it wins occasionally in the AGB Nielsen NUTAM People ratings.
