- Vice Ganda’s film The Mall, The Merrier remained in the no.1 spot
- The Pinoy remake of Miracle in Cell No.7 is putting up a good fight.
- Romantic comedy film Write About Love was in the lowest spot
In an unofficial ranking, Vice Ganda’s family comedy film The Mall, the Merrier is apparently taking the top spot with reported earnings of P100 million in less than a week.
Despite gaining criticisms at the start and not winning any award at the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2019 Gabi ng Parangal last Friday night, the Christmas comedy film attracted more moviegoers among the eight official entries in the film fest.
The Pinoy adaptation of the Korean film Miracle in Cell No. 7 climbed up from third to second place, threatening to dislodge the Vice Ganda starrer. The drama film top-billed by Aga Muhlach and Xia Vigor became a surprise hit with its positive reviews.
Meanwhile, Coco Martin, Jennylyn Mercado, and Ai-Ai Delas Alas’ 3Pol Trobol: Huli Ka Balbon ranked third while Mission Unstapabol: The Don Identity of Vic Sotto and Maine Mendoza got the fourth place.
The only horror film in the film fest Sunod led by Carmina Villaroel, Mylene Dizon, and JC Santos ranked fifth. It bagged three major awards: third Best Picture, cinematography, and production design.
Judy Ann Santos and Allen Dizon’s entry Mindanao came out as one of the talked about films though it suffered low ticket sales and fell down to the sixth spot.
Same as Mindanao, Iza Calzado and Jasmine Curtis-Smith’s Culion, which was in the seventh place, also suffered early pull-outs from some theaters in the country.
Write About Love starring Miles Ocampo, Rocco Nacino, Yeng Constantino. and Joem Bascon failed to advance in the ranks and stayed in last place. Despite this, the film secured eight awards, including second Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor and Actress for Joem Bascon and Yeng Constantino respectively.
The official ranking of the eight competing films is expected to be revealed after New Year as it was withheld by producers and the Executive Committee (ExeCom) to avoid the bandwagon effect.
The film festival will run until January 7, 2020.
