Several GMA Dramas are currently dominating Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, and Vietnam.
This was done through successful partnerships between the GMA Network’s content distribution subsidiary, GMA Worldwide, Inc. (GWI), and prominent broadcasters and content aggregators across the region.
Legally Blind
The 2017 Kapuso acclaimed series Legally Blind is currently gaining popularity in Malaysia. It premiered last July 1 through free TV channel TV3 Malaysia as a replacement of another GMA series A Woman Scorned (Ika-6 Na Utos). Starring Janine Gutierrez, Mikael Daez, Marc Abaya, and Lauren Young, the drama series tells the story Grace Evangelista (Janine Gutierrez), a beautiful, hardworking, and responsible law student who eventually passes the board exam with flying colous. In a dreadful turn of events, she becomes a rape victim of an unknown culprit, scarring her forever when the distress and trauma causes her to lose her sense of sight.
In spite of everything, she pursues her passion for law and eventually becomes a blind lawyer. Mikael Daez is Edward Villareal who will help Grace in her search for justice and will eventually become her boyfriend. Lauren Young is Charie Evangelista, the younger sister of Grace who is deeply envious of her while Marc Abaya is William Villareal, the older brother of Edward.
The series was also aired in Vietnam through Vietnam Television’s cable division Saigon Tourist Cable Television Company Limited (SCTV) on SCTV17 in August of this year.
Beautiful Strangers
The 2015 revenge drama Beautiful Strangers currently aired by Vietnam Cable TV’s Giải Trí TV. Starring Heart Evangelista and Lovi Poe, it revolves around the story of Kristine de Jesus (Heart) and Joyce Rodriguez (Lovi) as their lives intertwine when Kristine helps the homeless amnesiac Leah, who is actually Joyce who was sexually abused by Kristine’s father. They become friends and will eventually find out the truth.
Poor Seńorita
The 2016 comedy series Poor Seńorita was broadcasted in Brunei, by the country’s oldest free-to-air terrestrial television channel, Radio Televisyen Brunei’s (RTB) Aneka. It starred Regine Velasquez and Jaya. The series tells the story of Rita Villon (Regine), a rich heiress who decides to give up her wealth after being mistakenly diagnosed with gastric cancer. With no money and on the run from a hitman, Rita hides and meets Kyla, Rambo, Charisse, Apol, and Girlie who will help her.
My Love From The Star
GMA Network’s adaptation of the hit Korean drama My Love From The Star in 2017 recently premiered in Thailand through the cooperation between JKN Global Media and digital terrestrial television channel GMM 25. It stars Jennylyn Mercado and Gil Cuerva as the lead characters.
The story begins over 400 years ago when Matteo’s (Gil) spaceship crash-landed on Earth. Since then, he has lived many lives while eagerly awaiting the return of beings from his planet to take him home. He starts counting down the days and has about three months left waiting when he meets and encounters Steffi (Jennylyn). Steffi, being the popular actress, is used to people literally and figuratively falling down at her feet and giving her everything she wants.
