- Liza Soberano announced her withdrawal from Star Cinema’s ‘Darna’ project last April
- Jane de Leon was announced today as the new ‘Darna’
The upcoming film adaptation by Jerrold Tarog will feature Jane de Leon as the newest incarnation of ‘Darna.’
ABS-CBN Films’ managing director Olivia Lamasan confirmed the news in an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN News’ MJ Felipe.
“We have found a new Darna and she is none other than Jane de Leon!”
According to Lamasan, from the almost 300 auditionees for the iconic role, De Leon bagged the role via “a unanimous decision.”
“Natuwa nga ako na isa siya sa mga nag-audition. Sabi ko ay there’s something about her. Pati si Direk Lauren (Dyogi) said there’s something about her. Bilang filmmakers, may nakikita kami. Malakas ang instinct ng bata,” she said.
Jane succeeds Marian Rivera, who was the last to portray the Mars Ravelo character onscreen. Angel Locsin, who played Darna in 2005, was first tapped by Erik Matti to star in his film but a back injury forced the actress out of the Star Cinema project. Erik Matti was replaced by Jerrold Tarog when he resigned from the project last year. Liza Soberano, on the other hand, withdrew from the titular role of ‘Darna’ due to a right index finger fracture incurred in an accident on the set of the now-defunct fantaserye Bagani.
