- “Call Her Ganda,” the award-winning documentary about the case of slain Filipina transwoman Jennifer Laude, is showing at Cinema ’76 Film Society cinemas in Anonas and San Juan from March 15 to March 21.
- Director PJ Raval will be present at the 7 pm screening on March 16 at Cinema ‘76 San Juan, and at the 5 pm screening at Cinema ’76 Anonas to answer the audience’s questions.
- Docu producer Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala, Laude’s lawyer, Attorney Virgie Suarez and LGBTQ+ activist Naomi Fontanas, are set to join Raval at the Q & A sessions.
“Call Her Ganda” reveals the story of Jennifer who was brutally murdered by US Marine Scott Pemberton, through the perspectives of three women who are intimately invested in the case: activist Attorney Virgie Suarez, transgender journalist Meredith Talusan, and Jennifer’s mother, Julita “Nanay” Laude.
The screenings at Cinema 76 is the first of a series in Manila for the celebrated film that has received over 11 awards and nominations worldwide, including a Grand Jury Award at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival 2018, and Audience Choice at the Seattle Asian American Film Festival 2019.
Raval’s presence in Manila from March 15 to 20, 2019, also marks the director’s enduring interaction with the Filipino audience that began when his film had its Philippine premiere at the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival last August 2018.
In a speech read during the occasion of Jennifer Laude’s fourth death anniversary, Professor Patrick Flores of the University of the Philippines underscored the importance of the continued screenings in order to keep the case and Laude’s memory alive. Professor Flores said, “But remember, exactly, we must, as it is now our responsibility, and we owe to Jennifer and ourselves to ‘never forget,’ as the call of the times goes. We must speak against forgetfulness because there are so many things that are threatening to happen that must never happen again.”
