Filipino-made documentary films nowadays are never far from quality and authenticity against the different docu-movies from around the world. This made the Philippine docu-films push forward and be recognized as one of the best at the Home of the World’s Best TV and Films competition.
This 2019, eight docu-films from the Philippines are nominated in the New York Festival “World’s Best TV and Films” Competition. Five finalists were from the GMA Network and three from ABS–CBN, two of the most successful networks in the country.
From the GMA Network, the magazine-type program hosted by Jessica Soho, the ‘Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho’ show, was nominated for its “Salay” feature in the Community Portraits category.
Considered to be the country’s longest-running documentary program, I-Witness, earned two nominations – “War Zone ER” by Sandra Aguinaldo and “Bilanggo ng Isipan” by Kara David.
Another slot went to the Atom Araullo special episode “No Leftovers” which was nominated in the Social Issues category. Completing the five Slots is the GMA News TV’s Reel Time with its “Batang Maestro” documentary getting shortlisted in the Heroes category.
ABS CBN earned three nominations that aimed to “celebrate the exceptional and innovative content being created today.”
First is Mission Impossible’s “Kapit Lang Anak” (Hold on Anak) in the Best Public Affairs Program category. This was about the blind mother of a 13-year-old daughter named Sarah who has Down Syndrome. Mother Elsa lost the ability to provide for her children when blinded by glaucoma in 2011.
This episode earned for ABS-CBN a nomination in the Station/Image Promotion category. For the Biography/Profiles category, the station was also cited for its Local Legend’s “Karne Norte” episode which highlighted Filipino culture and heritage.
