- Kantar Media shows that ABS-CBN shows dominated in the ratings game
- NUTAM, on the other hand, promotes that GMA Network topped the ratings
- Both networks then claim that they lead the January 2019 ratings
Network rivalry is really a big thing in the Philippines. Two of the biggest TV networks, ABS-CBN Corp. and GMA Network Inc., tussled over nationwide TV ratings as both claimed dominance in January 2019, using data from different audience measurement providers which are Kantar Media and NUTAM.
Kantar Media
According to Kantar Media rating, ABS-CBN started 2019 with sky-high audience views nationwide. The rating service provider recorded the media network to beat its rival, GMA Network, by a wide margin for the whole month of January this year.
Kantar Media uses a nationwide panel size of 2,609 urban and rural homes. It has a total of 6.315 million homes in rural areas and 8.820 million homes in urban areas across the Philippines, bringing the total of 15.135 million homes nationwide covering 75 million individuals.
Based on Kantar Media’s data, the network hit an average audience share of 45% than GMA Network’s 30% in January, that is about 15 points gap.
ABS-CBN is in the forefront in Mega Manila where it gained 37% beating GMA Network’s 28% and in Metro Manila, it registered an average audience share of 44% against GMA Network’s 23%.
Likewise, in Total Luzon, it scored 40% versus GMA Network’s 32%, in Total Visayas with 54%, or 29 points higher than GMA Network’s 25%, and in Total Mindanao with 55%, while GMA Network only scored 26%.
It as well won in its all-time primetime blocks, where it gained an average audience share of 50%, or 21 points higher than GMA Network’s 29 points.
The Kapamilya network was also successful in dominating the morning block with an average audience share of 37%, compared to GMA Network’s 27%; in the noontime block with 42% versus GMA Network’s 31%; and in the afternoon block with 44%, beating GMA Network’s 33%.
GMA NETWORKS NUTAM RATINGS:
For NUTAM, it is the GMA Network that dominated the charts for the first month of the year, continuously beating its rival ABS-CBN Inc. with a greater point difference.
NUTAM uses a panel size of 1,980 homes based solely in urban areas that represent 57% of the total Philippine TV viewing population. There are 7,260,723 urban homes included in the measurement that encompasses 34 million individuals.
Based on NUTAM’s data, the network had an average total day people audience share of 37.8% beating ABS-CBN’s 35.9%.
Kapuso Network is consistently leading the ratings game in the areas of Urban Luzon and Mega Manila, which respectively accounted for a 72 and 60 percent of all urban viewers in the country.
Where in Urban Luzon, it gained a total average daily audience share of 41.9%,, which was higher than that of ABS-CBN’s 30.1%.
In Mega Manila, it tallied an even higher margin with a total average daily people audience share of 43.7%, versus Kapamilya’s 26.8%.
GMA network, in both the Urban Luzon and Mega Manila lists, takes up 8 and 9 spots out of the top 10 programs, respectively.
The GMA network was conquering in the morning block having a 34.8% audience share as against the other network getting only 30.9 %. Similarly, in the afternoon block, it gained a 40.1% people audience share again, surpassing the 34.2% of its rival network.
In addition, Kapuso’s free TV airing of the boxing fight of Manny Pacquiao against Adrien Broner last January 20 clearly dominated the competition. Garnering a whopping 69% while ABS-CBN only got 13.2%.
It was previously stated that Kantar Media records data from urban and rural areas while NUTAM only gets ratings from selected urban areas in the Philippines.
