- GMA Network’s television series got criticized by medical practitioners
- Medical misrepresentations can affect the entertainment industry
- ‘Asawa Ko, Karibal Ko’ and ‘My Special Tatay’ series got netizens scientifically abuzz online
Two of GMA Network’s afternoon primetime television series has been receiving criticisms from medical practitioners as they point out corrections on the network’s scenes for misperformance of medical procedures.
And one of this netizens, with an account name @Simply_Clinton, at first caught the attention of the series ‘Asawa Ko, Karibal Ko’ when he posted in his Twitter account a statement criticizing a scene stating out that Daniel cannot die from pillow suffocation since he has intubation attached to a mechanical ventilator, allowing him to breathe.
In his post on January 22 he stated, “Sino na naman ang researcher nito? Sorry ha pero saksakan ng shunga. Kahit pa ilang oras mo idagan yang unan, makakahinga pa rin siya kasi nga secured ang airways niya nyang intubation na nakakabit sa mech vent. Bwahahahaha si bitter na naman ba ang writer nito?”

This post got the attention of creative writer Suzette Doctolero, who then directly replied, “Writer ba ang nagdirek niyan o nag execute? Kita mo nga, nag point out ka ng mali pero mali din sinisisi mo. Hehehe.”

He, however, did not respond to the comment, but he did highlight to some commentators that he is a doctor and therefore is an expert in this field.

Then again another series was corrected after showing a misleading match of damage. It is in the 112th episode of ‘My Special Tatay’ where Boyet suffered two gunshot wounds. Based on the location of the blood stains during the scene, the first shot was on the upper left chest near the heart and the second shot was at the lower rib area on the right side.
If you’ll closely look at the scene it is very possible that the first shot might almost hit the heart and the second shot might hit the lower part of the right lungs or could be the right line of the liver, depending on the bullet’s trajectory.
However, the scene became questionable when the doctor who screened Boyet said, “Tinamaan ng bala sa ribs at ‘appendix’ ang anak niyo.” Now, this is very much different from what we have seen and concluded.
That again got netizens abuzz in social media as they began posting their different reactions and opinions regarding the scene.
One of those is the same netizen who criticized the previous series ‘Asawa Ko, Karibal Ko’ and now of ‘My Special Tatay’ where he posted, “Hahahaha Heart and lungs ang tama. This will lead to massive hemothorax and hemopericardium which will seriously affect the breathing. Often they will undergo chest thoracotomy to drain the blood first while preparing for surgery. So where are those tubes? Also the surgery will.”
Hahahaha

be open chest and as such the patient will be intubated, not a mere O2 cannula!
Also the chest is the one shot, why are you incising the appendix area? This is a work for thoracovascular/trauma surgeon… josko po, utang na loob. Sino writer at researcher, director?— simply_clinton (@Simply_Clinton) February 9, 2019
In case they think that’s where the appendix is, that would be the area of the right lower lungs or liver (cant pinpoint as we need to check if the point of entry is through or under the rib cage, under that blue shirt).

This also caught the attention of another medical practitioner account named @aren_emdi where he didn’t expect that his post will get the recognition of many.
In his post, he humorously said that maybe Boyet’s appendix is also special that is why the doctor in the scene wants to revive it. He said, “Special din siguro ang appendix ni Boyet, kaya gustong isalba ng doktor ang appendix niya. #MySpecialTatay.”

Many netizens find this humorous and at the same time alarming, knowing that television shows are aired not only locally but also caters to some international TV stations, thus it gives a lot of impact and giving wrong information can greatly affect the local entertainment industry, in general.
