- LionhearTV gives you 5 things that made “The Favourite” wickedly entertaining!
Director Yorgos Lanthimos has made a name for himself for his unconventional films like ‘The Lobster’ and ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer,’ with the former one winning the Cannes Film Festival – Jury Prize in 2017. This year, he gives audiences another of his bizarre yet entertaining masterpieces to date with “The Favourite.”
This tragicomedy revolves around one of the most memorable royal personalities of England as the center of the film, Anne, Queen of Great Britain (played in the movie by Olivia Colman) and the attempts of Abigail Masham (Emma Stone) and Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz) as they compete to influence the Queen during her early 18th-century rule.
LionhearTV gives you 5 things that made “The Favourite” wickedly entertaining!
1. The film was inspired by real-life characters.
Emma Stone’s Abigail Masham turned Baroness Masham and Rachel Weisz’s Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, were both actual persons that played a big role in the life of Queen Anne.
2. The film’s ridiculous and often hilarious story.
The film remained true in portraying the conflict between the two characters who shared different and conflicting political views back then. But of course, there were many things that were over-exaggerated for the sake of the story’s pacing, conflict, and comedic effects. Writers Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara twists and sensationalizes historical facts to ridiculous and often hilarious levels.
3. Director Yorgos Lanthimos’ most entertaining film to date.
Known for his absurd stories, Yorgos Lanthimos mixes the rich period detail from the posh and royal lifestyle of early 18th-century England with the ludicrous and amusing power play between Abigail and Sarah for the Queen’s attention. Both women are willing to go through different lengths just to get the queen’s favor, from sexual favors to an attempted murder (sort of). Lanthimos brings all sorts or appalling imagery and scandalous moments that in the end, you can’t hardly figure out what you have just watched.
4. The bravura performances from its leads Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone.
Adding to the fun are the three female leads of the film. Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz are both sensational in this period tragicomedy as the secret lesbian lovers whose symbiotic relationship was also a ticking time bomb in the story. But it was Emma Stone who caught my eyes as the punchy and audacious Abigail who is willing to give everything she got to regain her lost status quo. Definitely worthy of an Oscar award.
5. “The Favourite” is no doubt one of the best films that came out last year.
It has received multiple awards including two Venice International Film Festival awards: the Grand Jury Prize and the Volpi Cup for Best Actress (for Colman), 10 British Independent Film Awards, including Best Picture; Best Actress (Colman); Best Supporting Actress (Weisz); Best Director, and Best Screenplay. It was also nominated for five Golden Globe Awards, including Best Picture, and was even ranked by the American Film Institute as one of the top 10 films of 2018. It is currently nominated for ten Oscars for the 91st Academy Awards that will be held this coming February 24, 2019 —including the award for Best Picture (tying with ‘Roma’ as the most-nominated film).
