- Mikhail Red will be directing the upcoming zombie film ‘Block Z’
- ‘Block Z’ will serve as Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia 5th movie together
One can bet that Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia will be hoping that their new characters do not suffer the same fate in “Block Z,” the first zombie flick by Star Cinema, after their characters ended up dead in “Ngayon at Kailanman.”
Mikhail Red, the acclaimed young director behind “Birdshot” and “Eerie” attempts to inject life into the undead genre by adding some local flavor, in an upcoming movie to be starred in by Joshua and Julia.
In an interview during the story conference, together with the cast of Block Z, he explained his vision and how he wanted the movie to be different from the dying zombie genre.

He also explained that his take on the reanimated trope features “fast zombies” so viewers should expect a lot of frantic, exciting chase scenes.
“Hindi ito parang ‘Walking Dead’ na living corpse –dito mas infected sila, mas enraged so mas high-energy ito and mas fast-paced.
“Talagang full speed iyong habulan at takbuhan.”
“Block Z,” as teased by Red, is about a group trapped inside a university that has been quarantined due to a mysterious infection. This ragtag mix now have to navigate their way out using whatever makeshift weapons and supplies they can find.

Barretto will play one of the smartest medical students in her class while Garcia plays a varsity basketball player (a “handsome” one, joked Garcia).
Joshua and Julia will be joined by Ian Veneracion, Ina Raymundo, Maris Racal, Yves Flores, Dimples Romana, and Mccoy de Leon in the said movie.
The taping will commence by early February inside an undisclosed university in Metro Manila. On when it will be released, Red said they don’t want to rush the movie’s screening date.
