Comedian and Eat Bulaga dabarkads Jose Manalo stars in VST Productions first feature film presentation “Boy Tokwa: Lodi ng Gapo” directed by Tony Y. Reyes.
The film is based on a true story, from the accounts of Rodrigo Morelos’ (aka Boy Tokwa) friends, which focuses on Boy’s grandson, Andy Morelos Woods.
The story starts when Andy heads back to the Philippines to find out the truth about his grandfather, Boy. Andy soon learns that his grandfather’s greatest dream is to go to the USA. Boy’s dream led him to Olongapo where his wit, ability and skills in card games became his tools for survival in the town. Boy becomes a con artist that only targets foreigners and is well-loved by the community because of his loving nature, generosity and loyalty to friends.
During his stay in Olongapo, Boy met and courted Naval officer Anne McArthur, granddaughter of Gen. Douglas McArthur but was turned down. His journey eventually led him to meet Patricia Woods who is also a Naval officer whom he married and was blessed with a child. But Boy soon finds himself in the midst of conflict within the community he considers his family.
Upon going through with the story and seeing a photo of the real-life Boy Tokwa, Direk Reyes said he instantly thought of Jose to play the role.
Meanwhile, Jose shared that he didn’t connect with his role right away and even thought of rejecting the project as he didn’t feel ready to go solo. “Sabi ko nga, pwede na akong sidekick habambuhay,” the comedian stated. “Hanggang ngayon, kahit hindi ko pa napapanuod, hindi pa natatapos ‘yung movie, hindi pa ako (makapaniwala) na mag-sosolo ako.” Nevertheless, Jose feels thankful that he was tapped for the role.
Jose also stated that “Boy Tokwa: Lodi ng Gapo” features a good story. This is echoed by the director by saying that it’s filled with history as well as important lessons.
Although this is Jose’s first solo project, the comedian and Direk Reyes then revealed that Wally Bayola will be having a guest appearance in Boy Tokwa.
“Boy Tokwa: Lodi ng Gapo” also stars Joey Marquez, Karel Marquez, Allan Paule, Buboy Villar and Gian Sotto.
It will open on January 8 in cinemas to be distributed by Axinite Digicinema.
