Kate Valdez‘s rise to fame continues. In 2015, she signed a contract with GMA Network where she climbed her way to the top with her acting skills and striking features.
In an interview with Filipino-American comic book enthusiast and writer Michael “Mikey” Sutton in Paper Cuts Magazine, he expressed how much the young actress could make the jump to Hollywood.
Kate considers the opportunity as an honor.
Marvel is looking for actors for their Master of Kung Fu film. In the comic book, this features the Young Avengers. Sutton noted that Valdez could portray, Kate Bishop from the young team of world protectors.
“Have you thought about becoming an actress in Hollywood? A few days ago, a friend of mine who works for Marvel asked me who I’d think should play Kate Bishop from the Young Avengers in a movie. I mentioned you immediately as Marvel is looking for Asian actors for their Master of Kung Fu film. They’re going in that direction. Would you dream of being in a Disney/Marvel movie?”
Kate expressed her gratitude and pointed out that it would be a dream come true.
“Wow, thank you for believing in me, Mr. Sutton. That would definitely be a dream come true! To have the opportunity to play an Asian character in the Disney/Marvel franchise would be such an honor.”
Kate Valdez as Kate Bishop.
In the comic books, Kate Bishop is a New York socialite who (like her Avengers counterpart, Clint Barton) remains the only member of the team without actual superpowers. She was assaulted in Central Park which made her took up martial arts, swordplay and archery to help herself from the trauma.
Bishop would be one of the most important person in the Young Avengers as she tackles the issue of violence against women without unusual sensitivity. She takes on the mantle of Hawkeye without it having to be adjusted for her gender as suggested by her teammates with Lady Hawkeye, Hawkette or Miss Hawkeye.
Kate shares her goals as an actress.
In the same interview, Sutton asked Valdez about the achievements she would want to reach in her current field. Kate hoped to play challenging roles and keep on motivating herself.
“As an actress, my goals are to play challenging roles, to work with respected actors, and to keep myself motivated and happy to work. Also, the most important thing for me is to have time with my family despite my busy schedule, and to surround myself with positive people.”
If Kate Valdez does audition to play Kate Bishop, she would portray a badass woman fit for her character. Hawkeye distanced herself from the usual comic-book misogyny as she retains her own personhood and not defined by the stereotypes attached to women in comics.
