- Rep. Aniceto “John” Bertiz III used “monthly period” as an excuse for his airport outburst.
- Bertiz, biologically, couldn’t get a menstruation and has no right to use it as a lame excuse.
- He ascribed emotional behavior to his alleged monthly period which he clearly doesn’t have to endure.
Rep. Aniceto “John” Bertiz III is currently under fire after a viral video. He apologized after receiving backlash. In his apology, he cited that his “monthly period” made him act like that. Bertiz, biologically, couldn’t get a menstruation.
Therefore, has no right to use menstruation as his excuse.
Apology.
Attempting to defend his rude behavior, Bertiz said that his “monthly period” got the better of him. He ascribed emotional behavior to his alleged monthly period which he clearly doesn’t have to endure.
“For the past three years that I’ve been a member of Congress, once a year na medyo dapuan tayo ng ‘monthly period,’ ‘di ko na rin po maiaalis na tao lang po, na marupok at umiinit ang ulo-naistress din sa trabaho.”
Women: “Apology rejected.”
Women didn’t accept his apology, citing his excuse as misogynistic.
Broadcast journalist Karen Davila slammed Bertiz on likening menstruation to his entitled behavior.
“Sad apology. Ininsulto pa kaming mga kababaihan. Lets not liken the “monthly period” to feelings of entitlement by some people in power.”
Host and TV personality Bianca Gonzales quoted Karen’s tweet with only one word: “This.”
Many more female journalists and advocates slammed Bertiz for making menstruation as an excuse for his arrogant behavior when he clearly doesn’t have to go through it like all women do.
Journalist Lynda Jumilla-Abalos called Bertiz a sexist and misogynistic man who trivialized women’s menstrual cycle.
“What’s wrong with saying “sorry,” period? Why do you have to put “monthly” in between? Stop using and trivializing women’s menstrual cycle as an excuse for what you, as a man, did.”
Lawyer and Spokesperson of former President Benigno Aquino III, Abi Valte, called Bertiz a douche-bag, noting that women don’t use their menstruation for their attitudes.
“Una: once a year pero monthly talaga? Pangalawa: you’re a douchebag.
You don’t see women who get their periods every single month acting like you.
We’ll give you a hard pass, thanks.”
Multimedia journalist Natashya Gutierrez noted how Bertiz is a public official who invalidated women’s emotions.
“Inappropriate non-apology & avoids responsibility, but also sexist: He upholds the stereotype that women act crazy on their period. Women’s emotions are valid. It’s WRONG to dismiss them as caused by the time of the month. This, from a public official. Wow”
Citizen advocate Jane Uymatiao educated her followers (and also, hopefully Cong. Bertiz) on menstruation.
“Wow, can this guy say anything right? The woman’s monthly period is sacred to us and part of our femininity. It alters hormones though and can cause mood changes but that is no reason to make fun of it or use it as excuse for your arrogance, Cong. Bertiz!”
Female netizens slam Bertiz.
A lot of netizens noted that menstruations are more than just emotional instability.
“myghadd im a woman but i dont really use monthly periods just to get away something that can ruin my reputation. hey mister, u just dont know what we feel during monthly periods. its more than that!!!”
“To Rep. Bertiz, hindi po marahas ang mga babaeng nagdadaan sa kanilang monthly period. Excuse me! Don’t use us to justify your actions. @rapplerdotcom”
“I legit have my monthly period, but I don’t and never will act like Bertiz.
When you are an asshole. You are an asshole. That is were the “period” serves him purpose. #Bertiz”
“Dear Mr. Bertiz,
No uterus, no opinion. That is all. Thank you. You’re an asshole, it’s as simple as that.
Sincerely,
All women who get that damn monthly period you’re comparing it to”
“Lahat ng hirit nya palpak! Looks like that’s how he really is, monthly period has nothing to do with it nor any non-existent Chinese-looking passengers allowed to pass-through in the same queue.”
“Bertiz, you deserve to be expelled and thrown or flushed like the blood we expel during our monthly period.”
The said video consisted of the said representative disrespecting an airport screening officer. Bertiz refused to follow protocol of removing his shoes and instead flashed his ID at the face of the security officer.
