  • “Double Twisting Double Back,” “Hospicio,” and “Pang MMK” books out soon

Nine feature stories await moviegoers in the much-awaited Cinema One Originals 2018 along with restored Filipino classics, selected foreign films, best of C1 Originals, and exciting shorts, the festival started last Friday (October 12).

The fresh roster of competition films are vying to reign over the festival’s 14th year with the theme “I Am Original,” with selections depicting stories of crimes and injustice from young and brilliant directors of this generation.

Among these films are “A Short History Of A Few Bad Things,” “Asuang,” “Bagyong Bheverlynn,” “Double Twisting Double Back,” “Hospicio,” “Mamu; and a Mother too,” “Never Tear Us Apart,” “Paglisan,” and “Pang MMK.”

Aside from the film showing, three Cinema One Originals’ entries, for the first time, also have book versions—“Double Twisting Double Back,” “Hospicio,” and “Pang MMK.

“Hospicio,” the original screenplay by Bobby Bonifacio Jr. and Juvy Galamiton, features the various stories of addiction not only of the institution’s residents but also of its officials.

John Lapus’ “Pang MMK” book is an inspiration on overcoming adversities and facing them directly with one’s strength of character.

The screenplay of “Double Twisting Double Back,” a film by Joseph Abello, is also transformed into an erotic sports thriller novel.

This year’s world cinema highlights include “Ash is the Purest White,” “Bitter Melon,” “Girl,” “Las Herederas,” “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” “The Poet and The Boy,” and “Whitney.”

Among the restored classics to be showcased are “Alupihang Dagat,” “Anak,” “Ang Padrino,” “Ang Panday,” “Dekada ’70,” “Got 2 Believe,” “Gumising Ka Maruja,”  “Ikaw Pa Lang Ang Minahal,” “May Minamahal,” “Minsa’y Isang Gamu-Gamo,” “Nunal sa Tubig,” “Omeng Sanatasia,” “Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara,” and “Sa Init ng Apoy.”

The festival held a special star-studded opening night last Tuesday with the screening of “A Star Is Born” at Gateway Cineplex, attended by participating filmmakers and cast, film industry stalwarts, and the media.

Cinema One Originals is under the festival partnership program of the Film Development Council Of The Philippines (FDCP). Catch all the films starting Friday (October 12) until October 21 (Sunday) in TriNoma, Glorietta, Gateway, Santolan Town Plaza, Powerplant; in Cinelokal theaters—SM North Edsa, SM Megamall, SM Manila, and SM Sta. Mesa, and in alternative cinemas—FDCP Cinematheque Manila, Up Cine Adarna, Cinema ’76, Black Maria Theater and Cinema Centenario.

Ticket prices are at P200 each in major and alternative cinemas, P150 for students and at SM CineLokal theaters, and P100 at FDCP Cinematheque Manila. Festival passes are available ktx.abs-cbn.com. The C1 Originals books, priced at P195 each, are exclusively available for pre-order at National Book Store.
