- Ten young filmmakers vie for production scholarships and grants at the Viddsee Juree Awards Philippines 2018
- The Juree Awards initiative began with Juree Indonesia in 2016, followed by Juree Philippines in 2017
Ten bold and emotionally stirring stories have been selected as the finalists for the second Viddsee Juree Philippines, a festival of short films that celebrates and supports filmmaker communities in Asia. Among the supporters of this top-level competition for emerging filmmakers are the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (CSB) Benilde Film, and the Motion Picture Association (MPA).
The finalists of the 2nd Viddsee Juree Philippines are: “Divine XY” by Ruelo Lozendo of the Mowelfund Film Institute and Polytechnic University of the Philippines, “Igme and Gani” by Ma. Jhayle Ann Marie Z. Meer of the University of the Philippines Diliman, “The Lessons of The Night” by Christian Rae C. Villanueva of the College of Saint Benilde (CSB), “Susing” by Mykelle Alliza Jimenez and Martina Macalanda of Colegio de San Juan de Letran, “You Are The Star To My Night” by Brian Spencer Reyes of Colegio de San Lorenzo, “Ginhawa” by Christian Lat and Hannah Ybalez of the International Academy of Film and Television Cebu, “Ah” by AJ Virtuz of the Asia Pacific Film Institute and Emilio Aguinaldo College, “Stand Up” Ronald Van Angelo A. Dularte and Elaiza Rivera of CSB, “In the Name of the Father” by Patrick Rodil of UP Diliman, and “As Time Flows By” by Annika Yañez of CSB.
The films cover several genres and subjects that examine love, relationships, morality and sexuality – a woman wrestling for her father’s acceptance of her same-sex relationship (‘As Time Flows By’), a socially awkward comedian who gets inspiration from an imaginary friend (‘Stand Up’), an amateur boxer fighting to retain his brother’s legacy (‘Ginhawa’), and a money lender who gets caught up in a social media storm (‘Susing’), are just some of the films that made the list.
“This year’s entries showed a willingness of local filmmakers to explore various genres in telling stories that surprise and delight audiences, while daring enough to tackle social issues with compassion and heart,” said Viddsee’s Head of Content, Nikki Loke.
The winners will be announced on September 29 in an awards ceremony at the FDCP Cinematheque. Prior to the ceremony, Viddsee will be organising a three-day Juree Philippines Awards Programme from September 27-29 at the De La Salle-College of St Benilde Auditorium, and will feature a number of activities including talks, and screenings that are free and open to the public.
Two top entries will be named Gold and Silver winners, who will be picked by an international panel of judges that comprises Malaysian publisher, writer and filmmaker Amir Muhammad; Tribeca Film Festival Shorts Programmer Ben Thompson; and actress Cherie Gil Eigenmann, the three-time Best Supporting Actress winner in the Metro Manila Film Festival, and recipient of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Ani ng Dangal award.
Gold and Silver winners will be awarded film production grants worth PHP160,000 and PHP80,000 respectively, along with audio equipment provided by RØDE Microphones. The Gold winner will also win a five-day Global Film & TV Program in Los Angeles sponsored by the Motion Picture Association. All ten finalists will receive a 12-month Creative Cloud All Apps subscription worth US$560 each from Adobe.
Aside from the main winners, finalists and out-of-competition films can also vie for the Audience Choice Award, which will be picked based on the most number of ‘likes’ it receives on Viddsee.com. The winning director will take home an Apple TV.
The Juree Awards initiative began with Juree Indonesia in 2016, followed by Juree Philippines in 2017. This year marks the first time that the Juree Awards will be held across Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines.
