  • The Emmys was held on September 17, Monday night.
  • Hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che delivered a monologue, calling out Hollywood’s lack of diversity.
  • In the said monologue, Che mentioned how a medical drama had 15 seasons without one Filipino nurse.

The Emmy Awards was held on September 17, Monday night at the . Colin Jost and Michael Che hosted the ceremony. In their monologue, Michael pointed out Hollywood’s lack of diversity in its shows.

Medical dramas.

Filipino nurses are prevalent and have their own community in the United States. They, however, don’t have that much recognition and representation in Hollywood, especially in medical dramas such as ER and Grey’s Anatomy.

Grey’s Anatomy centers around Meredith Grey who struggles to maintain relationships with her colleagues in the hospital. It has 14 seasons and 137 episodes.

ER was a medical drama set in Chicago which deals with personal and professional crises of the doctors in the emergency room at County General Hospital. It has 15 seasons and 331 episodes.

No Filipino nurses?

Michael called out Hollywood’s lack of diversity. He pointed out that ER had 15 seasons without one Filipino nurse in it.

“TV has always had a diversity problem. I mean, can you believe they did 15 seasons of ER without one Filipino nurse? Have you been to a hospital?”

Filipinos react.

Netizens reacted to this joke on Twitter, pointing out how true this statement was. Even ABS-CBN entertainment reporter Yong Chavez joined in the reactions and was glad someone has finally pointed this out.

“I’ve tweeted about the lack of Filipino nurses in US medical shows so many times. Glad it finally made it as an Emmy joke. Now please take it seriously now, Hollywood. “

“There’s this one joke from some guy on the Emmy’s that I overheard

“Can you believe they did 15 seasons of ER without one Filipino nurse?”

Aysusmaryoseph I’m done”

“This is real!!! Filipinos are all over the world and its the time that we need to be represented and BE SEEN AS WELL!”

“lmao when they talked about not having Filipino nurses on ER”

“That crack about no Filipino nurses on ER….truuuue.”

“bahaha shout out to the filipino nurses “

“Best line of the night: Can you believe they did 15 seasons of ER without one Filipino nurse?! #emmys on #diversity @TheEmmys”

“They just made a joke on the Emmy’s about how in 15 years of the ER, there was no Filipino nurse”

Diversity has always been a huge issue to pick on in awards ceremonies.
