GMA Network has an upcoming afternoon series titled My Special Tatay.
The network has appointed Ken Chan to play the difficult lead role as a mentally-challenged father who will try to raise his son.
The actor willingly accepted the role. He considers it to be his biggest break yet following his talked-about performance in the series Destiny Rose where he played a transgender.
In an interview, Ken Chan shared, “Hindi ganun kadali ‘yung sa physical, sa emotional, and sa mental, and lahat ‘yun kailangan ko pag-aralan.”
Ken agreed to an immersion to fully understand his role. He got the chance to mingle and talk with people with the same mental condition. He shared that spending time with these people made him realize many things.
“May isa akong na-interview, ang sabi niya, ‘Ang tanging hiling ko lang ay respetuhin ako ng mga tao. Sawang sawa na ako ma-bully,’” Ken shared.
Ken Chan was last seen as part of the The Cure. He will be working again with Arra San Agustin in My Special Tatay who was his co-star in the The Cure.
Arra described her role in the upcoming series as, “Ako ‘yung parang magiging support system niya (Ken’s character). Parang shoulder to cry on. Best friend, like guardian angel ni Boyet (Ken Chan).” And, most probably Ken’s love interest, too.
The aim of the show is to educate the viewers on what it is like to suffer from mental disability and learn to respect these people.
